Chapter 11 - THE DAMAGE INSIDE THE PLAN

Eleanor did not intend to abandon two older adults at a hotel.

Frank and Teresa would travel with Marcus in a hired accessible vehicle. Their Riverdale apartment remained available, and a home-health coordinator would return with them afterward.

The trip to Kiyomi had one purpose.

David had demanded access to his parents and their belongings while portraying Eleanor as the obstacle.

She would remove the obstacle.

Before they left, Northbridge contacted Eleanor’s studio.

A compliance officer needed confirmation that she had not authorized David to use company tax records for the relocation application.

The inquiry unsettled two of her clients, both hotel groups that did business with Northbridge. One postponed a design contract until the matter was clarified.

David’s fraud had entered her workplace.

For years, Eleanor had kept her finances separate because she believed money could protect her from marital instability. She had not considered that David could use her reputation as collateral.

At Riverdale, Frank asked Eleanor to sit beside him before the car arrived.

“I should have stopped Teresa from moving in,” he said.

“You believed David.”

“I also liked believing someone else had solved the future.”

Frank admitted that he had suspected the condo money was being used too quickly. He had remained quiet because Teresa became frightened whenever he questioned David.

“My illness changed how she looked at every decision,” he said. “She thought disagreeing with our son meant risking the one person who would care for her after I couldn’t.”

Eleanor glanced toward Teresa, who was folding a cardigan into the last suitcase.

“She tried to turn me into that person.”

“Yes.”

“And you let her.”

“Yes.”

There was no dramatic defense. The honesty made forgiveness possible without making it immediate.

Teresa entered carrying the framed family photograph.

“I want David to see this,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because he put himself in the center of every picture and called that love.”

At Kiyomi, the manager allowed them upstairs after Marcus explained the circumstances and David confirmed by phone that he wanted his parents admitted.

The suite doors opened onto lantern light, cherry petals scattered across the bed, and the Manhattan skyline shining beyond floor-to-ceiling glass.

Lila knelt beside an open suitcase in a red slip.

David stood near the bed in black briefs, his expression shifting from anger to disbelief.

Teresa’s luggage entered first.

Then Frank’s walker.

Then boxes labeled WINTER CLOTHES, MEDICAL, and FAMILY PHOTOS.

David looked at Eleanor.

“What the hell are you doing?”

Eleanor removed her coat.

“I’m returning the part of your future you assigned to me.”
