Chapter 10 - THE ASSIGNMENT THAT NEVER EXISTED
Northbridge’s forensic review produced the major break.
The altered relocation requests had been submitted from David’s corporate laptop while connected to the Kiyomi Hotel network. Lila’s old travel credentials opened the draft files, but the final approvals used a manager-level authorization token assigned to David’s supervisor.
David did not possess that token.
At least, he should not have.
The supervisor remembered leaving his security key in a conference room after a late budget meeting. David had returned it the next morning, joking that senior leadership needed younger people to keep track of its belongings.
The comment had seemed harmless.
It now explained the approval trail.
Three earlier details shifted into place.
David staged the JFK farewell because he needed Eleanor to believe the relocation had begun before Northbridge examined the Tokyo staffing delay.
He moved his parents into her home because their presence supported the dependent-care claim and made it harder for Eleanor to travel after him.
He purchased the diamond because he expected access to relocation funds that had not yet been released.
Northbridge had approved preliminary reimbursements based on fraudulently authorized forms, but the largest payment was scheduled only after David confirmed arrival in Japan.
He planned to fly the next morning and trigger the release.
The company suspended him before he could do it.
The suspension froze his corporate travel account, hotel access, and email. It did not cancel his privately purchased airline tickets.
David could still leave.
Lila received a message from him during the compliance interview.
Pack now. We’re taking the 1:20 flight. Don’t speak to anyone else.
She showed it to her attorney.
“I’m not going,” she said.
Eleanor expected satisfaction.
Instead, she felt the dullness that follows proof when proof confirms something too ugly to celebrate.
David had not only betrayed her.
He had exploited Teresa’s loyalty, Frank’s illness, Lila’s ambition, Northbridge’s systems, and every private weakness he had learned from living beside them.
Lila returned to Kiyomi to collect her belongings with her attorney’s investigator waiting downstairs.
Eleanor received another message from Northbridge.
David had asked the company to release his personal possessions and claimed Eleanor was withholding his parents’ medical property at her home.
The accusation gave Eleanor an idea.
Teresa and Frank still had several suitcases and boxed belongings in the brownstone’s guest rooms. Their framed photographs, spare medication supplies, and winter clothes had not yet been moved to Riverdale.
Eleanor called them.
“I can have everything delivered to your apartment,” she said.
Teresa was quiet for a moment.
“Take it to David.”
“Why?”
“Because he keeps telling people you stole his family from him.”
