Chapter 2 - What Nora Refused to Leave Behind

Nora did not touch the medical bag.
She kept herself between Daniel and Claire.
“Claire, can you stand?”
Daniel took one step forward.
Nora’s voice sharpened.
“Don’t.”
Something in her tone stopped him.
Claire pushed against the sofa, but her knees buckled.
Nora caught her under the arms.
Daniel immediately changed tactics.
“This is ridiculous. She falls all the time now.”
Claire looked at him.
“I don’t.”
“She gets confused after her meds,” he continued, speaking to Nora as though Claire were no longer part of the conversation. “Her doctors warned us about chemo brain.”
Claire had never received chemotherapy.
Her treatment had been surgery followed by targeted therapy that had not yet started.
Nora knew that.
So did Daniel.
“You know she didn’t have chemo,” Nora said.
His jaw tightened.
“I meant the cancer. Whatever.”
Nora reached slowly for her phone.
Daniel saw the movement.
“You call anybody and you’re never working in this house again.”
“That decision isn’t yours anymore.”
Claire whispered, “Nora.”
Nora turned.
Claire’s face was red where Daniel had struck her.
“Don’t leave me here.”
That decided everything.
Nora called 911.
Daniel walked into the kitchen before the dispatcher finished asking for the address.
He returned carrying a glass of water as if he had become a concerned husband in the thirty seconds it took to cross the room.
“Claire, sit down. You’re worked up.”
She recoiled from him.
He stopped.
Nora watched his face change again.
For years, Daniel had depended on Claire moving toward him after arguments.
Sometimes because he apologized.
Sometimes because she wanted peace.
Sometimes because she had convinced herself that marriage required understanding the worst version of somebody.
This time she moved behind Nora.
Paramedics arrived nine minutes later.
Police followed because the emergency call involved an assault.
Daniel immediately began explaining.
His wife was recovering from cancer.
She had been unstable.
The nurse misunderstood a private argument.
Claire had fallen.
Nora had become aggressive.
One officer listened.
The other looked at Claire’s cheek.
Then at Nora’s torn scrub collar.
Then at Daniel’s right hand.
Claire said only one sentence.
“He hit both of us.”
It was enough to change the direction of the questions.
The paramedics recommended hospital evaluation because Claire had recently undergone abdominal surgery and had been knocked to the floor.
Nora picked up her tan medical bag.
Daniel watched her.
His eyes remained fixed on it while Claire was helped onto the stretcher.
Nora noticed.
So did one of the officers.
At the hospital, Claire was examined for complications from the fall.
No new internal injury appeared on imaging.
Her surgical site remained intact.
The relief lasted less than five minutes.
Then the emergency physician returned holding Claire’s medication list.
“There’s something we need to clarify.”
Claire looked toward Nora.
The doctor continued.
“Your initial screening suggests you may have taken a sedating medication that isn’t listed here.”
Claire stared at him.
“I haven’t.”
“Not intentionally?”
“No.”
Nora slowly set the tan bag on the counter.
Inside it was the tablet she had removed from Claire’s pill organizer that afternoon.

Until that moment, it had been a suspicious pill.
Now it was evidence of something much harder to dismiss.
