Chapter 1 - The Door That Opened Twice

The front door had barely clicked shut behind Nora Bennett when Daniel Mercer grabbed his wife by the hair.
Claire made one shocked sound before he yanked her backward.
Her hip struck the edge of the sofa.
Then came the first slap.
The second snapped her face the other way.
The third sent her collapsing onto the rug.
Six weeks earlier, surgeons at Northwestern Memorial Hospital had removed a cancerous mass from Claire’s abdomen. She had spent the weeks since learning how to stand without pulling at healing tissue, how to eat when nausea made food taste metallic, how to accept help without feeling like she had surrendered her life.
Daniel knew all of that.
He dropped to one knee and pinned her shoulders against the floor anyway.
“Cry louder,” he said with a contemptuous smile. “Maybe the cancer will finally make you useful.”
Claire stared at the man she had been married to for fourteen years.
There had been cruelty before.
Doors slammed hard enough to shake pictures.
Credit cards taken from her wallet because she was “too foggy to handle money.”
Questions about whom she had called.
Arguments Daniel somehow remembered differently the next morning.
But never this.
Not three blows delivered with the casual confidence of a man who believed nobody would see them.
“When she asks,” Daniel said, leaning closer, “blame your dying body. Don’t blame me.”
A click came from the foyer.
Daniel stopped.
The front door opened.
Nora stepped inside.
Her tan medical bag still sat beside the coat closet where she had forgotten it.
For less than a second, nobody moved.
Then Nora saw Claire beneath Daniel.
Her professional calm disappeared.
“Get your hands off her now.”
Daniel rose.
He laughed once.
“None of your business. I’m teaching my wife a lesson.”
He crossed the foyer before Nora could reach Claire.
His foot drove into Nora’s side.
She staggered into the sofa.
Daniel grabbed the front of her navy scrub top and shoved her down against the cushions.
Nora tried to rise.
He seized her again.
His fist came up.
Claire forced herself onto one elbow.
Pain tore through her abdomen.
Still she screamed.
“STOP! SHE FOUND OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN MY MEDICATION!”
Daniel froze.
His raised hand remained inches from Nora.
The change in his face was immediate.
Not anger.
Fear.
His eyes moved from Claire to Nora.
Then toward the tan medical bag beside the door.
Nora saw him look at it.
And suddenly the odd details of the previous three weeks rearranged themselves in her mind.
Claire becoming strangely disoriented only on certain evenings.
The pill Nora had found in Monday’s organizer that did not match Claire’s pharmacy description.
Daniel insisting he would handle the bedtime medication himself.
Two pills missing from a bottle that should have contained enough doses through Friday.
Nora had not yet accused anyone.
She had quietly placed the questionable tablet in a sealed medication-return pouch and made a note for Claire’s oncologist.
That pouch was inside the bag Daniel was staring at.
Nora stepped between him and Claire.
Daniel lowered his fist.
“What exactly do you think you found?”
Nora did not answer.
May you like
Claire looked at her husband.
For the first time since her cancer diagnosis, Daniel looked more frightened of her recovery than of her illness.
