The CWD dispute resolved slowly.
The properties were worth more than the debts.
That meant Claire’s thirty-percent ownership had real value.
Derek argued she had contributed little.
The records showed otherwise.
Her guarantees supported financing.
Thomas’s money, sent because of Derek’s misrepresentations, helped fund acquisitions.
Claire had signed documents.
Whether fully informed or not, her legal involvement was substantial.
Rather than operate together indefinitely, they negotiated separation of interests.
One property was sold.
Debt was paid.
Another was refinanced under tighter controls.
Claire received a settlement reflecting her documented ownership after liabilities and disputed transactions were accounted for.
It did not make her suddenly wealthy.
It gave her enough to rebuild without depending on Derek or Thomas.
That mattered more.
The false-notarization matter continued separately.
Sabrina accepted responsibility for notarizing a signature outside Claire’s presence.
Derek continued denying any forged signature.
Claire stopped making her recovery depend on that outcome.
The divorce settlement addressed other financial issues.
Retirement.
House equity.
Personal debts.
Tax liabilities.
No one “lost everything.”
Reality was more complicated.
Then Dana called with one final accounting discovery.
Derek had been paying a private consultant almost $2,000 a month.
Claire expected another financial scheme.
It was a reputation-management service.
Derek had hired them to prepare statements portraying Claire as mentally unstable if the separation became public.
Draft language existed.
Claire has struggled privately for years.
Derek has remained a devoted caretaker.
He hopes she receives the help she needs.
Claire stared at the sentences.
They were calm.
Compassionate.
Devastating.
Derek had been preparing not only to control her.
But to narrate her escape.
The basement incident ruined that plan because Thomas arrived before Derek controlled the story.
That explained Derek’s panic at the knocks even more clearly.
He was not only afraid of being caught physically abusing Claire.
He was afraid an outside witness would see something incompatible with the version he had prepared.
Claire asked Dana, “Can we release these?”
“Why?”
“So everyone knows.”
Dana paused.
“Do you need everyone to know?”
Claire looked at the draft again.
A year earlier, yes.
She would have wanted a public verdict.
Good Claire.
Bad Derek.
Victim.
Monster.
Now she wanted something else.
A life.
“Keep them in the file,” she said.
“If they become relevant legally, use them.”
“And otherwise?”
“Otherwise I don’t want him deciding what I spend my future talking about.”
That was Claire’s most decisive retaliation.
