Chapter 1 - The Three Knocks Behind the Basement Door

Claire was hanging upside down when Derek told her even her own father knew she was useless.

Her ankles were secured over the low basement crossbar. Sweat soaked her purple blouse. Her hair hung toward the black water beneath her.

Derek grabbed her shoulders and jerked her toward him.

Then he slapped her.

“Still crying? Even your father knows you’re useless.”

Claire sobbed.

For months, Derek had used her father the same way.

Your dad stopped calling because he’s ashamed of you.

Your dad knows what you’re really like.

Your dad warned me you were impossible.

Each sentence hurt because Claire and her father, Thomas, had barely spoken since her wedding.

Derek glanced at the filthy laundry basin beneath her.

He smiled.

Then he released her.

Claire dropped into the dirty water with a violent splash.

She struck the side of the basin but remained conscious, soaked and shaking.

“Good,” Derek said. “Now you look like the trash I actually married.”

Something inside Claire finally broke in a different direction.

Not surrender.

Anger.

She pushed herself upright against the rim.

“I should have listened to my father... and never married you, you bastard.”

Derek’s smile disappeared.

Then came the sound.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

Three heavy knocks against the basement door.

Derek turned.

Claire stopped breathing.

Nobody was supposed to come downstairs.

Derek had told everyone Claire was sick.

Resting.

Emotionally unstable.

He had even removed the basement doorknob lock from the inside weeks earlier.

Another knock came.

Then a man’s voice.

“Claire?”

Derek went pale.

Claire knew that voice.

Her father.

Thomas Hale had not spoken her name inside that house for nearly three years.

Derek stepped toward the door.

“Don’t answer.”

Claire stared at him.

For the first time that night, Derek sounded afraid.

Thomas knocked again.

“Claire, I know you’re down there.”

Derek looked back at his wife.

Claire saw calculation in his eyes.

She also saw something else.

Recognition.

Derek was not surprised Thomas had come.

May you like

He was terrified Thomas had come tonight.

That difference mattered.
