Chapter 12 - The Sister Who Finally Said What She Wanted

The direct confrontation happened in Priya’s office.
No hospital.
No hidden camera.
No dramatic hallway.
Just a conference table and a box of tissues nobody touched at first.
Isabella arrived with her attorney.
Khloe with Marcus and Priya.
Laura attended remotely.
The first hour was factual.
Dates.
Forms.
Messages.
The second became personal.
Khloe asked the question she had saved.
“What did you actually want?”
Isabella stared at her.
“I wanted you to have a baby.”
“No.”
Khloe shook her head.
“That was true at the beginning. What did you want after I got pregnant?”
Isabella looked away.
“Nothing.”
“Then why did you ask about the second embryo?”
Her attorney started to intervene.
Isabella raised one hand.
“I wanted it preserved.”
“For what?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Did you think about carrying it?”
Silence.
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Isabella finally said, “Yes.”
Khloe felt the room go cold.
“Why?”
“Because it’s mine too.”
Marcus stood.
Priya quietly said his name.
He sat again.
Isabella continued, tears finally appearing without performance.
“I gave you something I can never get back.”
Khloe stared.
“You offered eggs.”
“I offered you a chance.”
“You stole my choice.”
“I thought once you had the baby, you’d understand.”
“Understand what?”
“That biology matters.”
The hypocrisy was breathtaking.
For months Isabella told Khloe genetics shouldn’t matter when Khloe protested.
Now genetics mattered because Isabella wanted emotional ownership.
Khloe whispered, “You wanted to be grateful and important at the same time.”
Isabella’s face collapsed.
There.
The truth.
After their mother died, Isabella became the fixer.
The strong sister.
The person who solved things.
Khloe’s marriage changed that.
Her pregnancy changed it more.
If Khloe built a family outside Isabella’s orbit, Isabella feared losing the role that defined her.
Donating eggs should have made her permanently central.
Instead it had to remain invisible because true informed consent would have allowed Khloe to say no.
Isabella wanted both.
Power without accountability.
Importance without boundaries.
She looked at Khloe.
“I couldn’t stand watching you disappear into grief.”
Khloe answered quietly.
“So you disappeared me from the decision.”
Isabella began crying.
No one comforted her.
Not because she was beyond compassion.

Because the consequence she had avoided for seven months was finally simple:
She had to sit with the fact that love did not make her entitled to choose another woman’s motherhood.
