Chapter 1 - The Heel Beside Her Belly

Isabella Reed had one red heel planted on the hem of Khloe Bennett’s maternity dress when Marcus opened the hospital-suite door.

Khloe was curled on the polished stone floor beside the bed, one arm wrapped around her seven-month belly.

Isabella looked down at her.

“You should’ve stayed quiet.”

Then she heard the door.

Her expression changed.

Marcus crossed the room so fast his shoulder hit the edge of the doorframe.

“Khloe?”

His wife recoiled backward until her spine met the bed.

“She did this.”

Isabella instantly stepped away.

“That is not what happened.”

Marcus moved between them.

When Isabella pointed toward Khloe, he knocked her hand aside.

“Don’t lie to me.”

Isabella’s eyes filled almost on command.

“She fell. Ask her what happened before you came in.”

Marcus didn’t look at her.

He knelt beside Khloe.

“Are you hurt?”

“My side hurts. The baby’s moving.”

“Did she hit you?”

Khloe looked at Isabella.

Not yet.

That hesitation gave Isabella the opening she wanted.

“She came at me. I tried to stop her from leaving the room.”

Khloe stared at her.

“You locked the door.”

“I was trying to calm you down.”

Marcus turned.

“Why would she need calming down?”

Isabella’s fake tears continued.

“She’s been emotional all day.”

It sounded almost reasonable.

That was Isabella’s talent.

She could take an ugly act and wrap it in concern before anyone else found language for what had happened.

Khloe pushed herself higher against the bed.

“I found something.”

Isabella’s eyes flicked upward.

Just once.

Toward the ceiling corner.

Marcus caught it.

A tiny red light blinked beside the smoke detector.

The hospital suite’s internal safety camera.

Isabella saw Marcus follow her gaze.

Her tears vanished.

Marcus slowly stood.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He looked from the blinking light back to her.

Then to Khloe.

“What did she find?”

Khloe’s breathing became shallow.

“She told me the baby wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Marcus went completely still.

Isabella moved first.

“Khloe misunderstood.”

Marcus crossed to the wall-mounted security tablet beside the door.

The suite was part of a private maternal-observation wing used for high-risk pregnancies and VIP patients. The tablet controlled visitor access, nurse calls, environmental settings, and the internal safety feed.

Marcus touched the screen.

Before it fully woke, Isabella grabbed his wrist.

His head snapped toward her.

“What are you hiding?”

Her face drained of color.

For the first time that afternoon, Khloe saw Isabella genuinely afraid.

Not of being caught pushing her.

Not of Marcus becoming angry.

Of something that happened before Marcus entered Room 612.

And when Khloe looked toward the bedside cabinet, she understood why.

The deep-burgundy hospital pouch she had hidden there was gone.
