Chapter 13 - THE EVIDENCE IN THEIR OWN ROUTINES
No hidden camera captured the backyard.
No stranger had watched the entire assault.
The case was built from ordinary records that existed because people had followed routines.
The water department confirmed unusually heavy outdoor use during the three days I was restrained.
Grant’s landscaping app recorded his phone at our home instead of scheduled job sites.
Teresa’s vehicle data showed that her SUV remained in our driveway overnight.
A grocery receipt from her account included plastic insect containers, bottled water, crackers, and disposable gloves purchased the morning after I was first buried.
The clinic documented my missed appointments and Jasmine’s earlier concerns.
The lender preserved the coercion call, including Teresa tearing the phone cord free and Grant ordering me to “fix what you just did.”
Owen’s archived emails established the motive.
Most important, Teresa had texted Grant from inside the house while he stood beside the trench.
Don’t loosen the dirt until she agrees to the account transfer.
Grant had not deleted the message.
He claimed he kept it because he knew he might eventually need to prove his mother’s role.
That explanation did not make him look better.
It showed that even while I was buried, he understood they were creating evidence of a crime.
The defense attorneys began discussing separate plea agreements.
Teresa refused every offer.
She insisted I had agreed to a “family intervention” and later exaggerated the event to seize control of Grant’s child.
Grant accepted responsibility for restraint and domestic violence, though his lawyer continued negotiating sentencing terms.
My obstetrician recommended induction at thirty-nine weeks because of my blood pressure and the stress of the case.
Before the final pretrial conference, Teresa sent a message through her attorney.
She offered to transfer her remaining company proceeds into a trust for my baby if I described the backyard incident as Grant’s idea alone.
The offer proved she still believed every relationship could be priced.
