Chapter 10 - THE SALE THAT NEVER INCLUDED GRANT
Owen found the missing records because Teresa had underestimated him.
For years, she treated her younger son like an unreliable employee. Owen repaired equipment, managed crews, and signed whatever she placed in front of him. She assumed he never read the company email.
She was wrong.
Three months before my assault, Owen had created an automatic archive after Teresa deleted messages concerning unpaid taxes. He did not confront her because he feared losing his job and health insurance.
The archive contained the Cincinnati negotiations.
The proposed sale price was $2.4 million, but the buyer required Mercer Outdoor Services to clear supplier liens and resolve a disputed tax balance before closing.
Teresa’s plan was laid out across weeks of emails.
The loan against my house would clear the liens.
The company sale would close.
Teresa would receive most of the proceeds through her ownership share and move to Oklahoma.
Grant and Owen would receive far less after personal guarantees and business debts were deducted.
One email from Teresa to her sister was especially clear:
Grant thinks he’ll keep running the company under the new owners. Let him believe it until Elena signs.
The discovery reinterpreted everything.
The suitcases were not an emergency plan.
The asset inspections were not insurance reviews.
The urgent Thursday meeting was not about payroll.
And Teresa’s repeated warning that I was “destroying Grant’s future” hid the fact that she had already sold that future without telling him.
Grant learned the truth from his attorney while being held at the county jail.
He requested a meeting with investigators.
He offered to describe Teresa’s role in exchange for leniency.
When my attorney told me, I did not feel satisfaction.
Grant had packed dirt around my pregnant body with his own hands. He had heard me say the baby was moving less. He had struck me after I resisted.
His mother manipulated him.
She did not control his arms.
The prosecutor asked whether I would oppose a plea agreement requiring Grant to testify against Teresa.
I looked at my bruised reflection in the hospital window.
