Chapter 4 - THE CUSTODY THREAT SHE CREATED

Julian confronted Eleanor by phone from the hospital consultation room.

He placed the call on speaker at his attorney’s request.

“You intercepted Clara’s letter.”

Eleanor did not deny signing for it.

“You were overwhelmed. The Harbor Street project was collapsing, Chloe was still grieving, and Clara wanted more than you could give.”

“You read private mail addressed to me.”

“I prevented another crisis.”

“What happened to the letter?”

“I disposed of it.”

Julian closed his eyes.

I should have felt vindicated. Instead, I watched the man I had once loved discover that his mother had decided which children he was allowed to know.

His attorney asked Eleanor about the letter from Chloe’s maternal grandparents.

“They were preparing to seek custody,” Eleanor said.

Records showed something more complicated.

The grandparents had contacted an attorney only after Eleanor called them repeatedly, describing Julian as emotionally unstable and claiming I intended to replace Chloe’s mother. Eleanor supplied photographs of me leaving Julian’s apartment after overnight shifts and suggested my schedule created a dangerous environment.

She then brought the resulting legal warning to Julian as proof that our relationship threatened his daughter.

Eleanor had created the crisis she later helped him avoid.

Her motive began to emerge through the trust records.

As long as she provided Chloe’s daily care, Eleanor could request reimbursement for tutoring, transportation and household support. She used fabricated invoices to move trust money into Bright Path, then transferred it into Julian’s failing real-estate project.

Some of the money paid contractors.

Some covered Eleanor’s mortgage.

Julian looked at the signature pages.

“I approved these.”

“You approved forms your mother described as medical expenses,” his attorney said. “That doesn’t make you innocent of negligence.”

He did not argue.

My own anger shifted.

Julian had been manipulated, but he had also made manipulation easy. Eleanor told him what to fear, and he obeyed without examining the cost to Chloe or me.

That evening, I finally answered his question.

“The baby is yours.”

He sat beside Chloe’s empty hospital bed while she was downstairs receiving a new cast.

“Boy or girl?”

“A boy.”

“Have you chosen a name?”

“Yes.”

He waited.

I did not tell him.

Before he could ask again, his attorney received an alert from the trust’s accountant. Someone had attempted to destroy Bright Path’s online bookkeeping records.
