Chapter 2 - THE LETTER HE NEVER RECEIVED
Julian found me outside the imaging room.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I did.”
He shook his head. “I would’ve remembered being told I had another child.”
“I emailed you twice. I left a voicemail with your office. I sent a certified letter.”
“I never got any of them.”
“The letter was signed for.”
“By who?”
I opened the photograph of the delivery receipt that I had saved after spending three weeks waiting for him to respond.
Eleanor Vale.
Julian’s mother.
After Chloe’s mother died, Eleanor had taken over the practical parts of his life. She managed his office calendar, collected mail from the family real-estate company and stayed with Chloe whenever Julian worked late.
She had also hated me from the first evening we met.
Not openly. Eleanor preferred concern to cruelty. She worried that my hospital shifts would confuse Chloe. She questioned whether a pediatric emergency physician could provide a stable home. When Julian and I discussed marriage, Eleanor reminded him that Chloe’s maternal grandparents had once threatened to seek custody.
Three days later, Julian ended our relationship.
He said he could not give me the family I wanted.
“You didn’t even let me answer,” I said.
“I thought I was protecting Chloe.”
“From me?”
“From another custody fight.”
Julian explained that Eleanor had shown him a letter from an attorney representing Chloe’s maternal grandparents. It claimed they would seek expanded custody if Julian moved an unmarried partner into his home or disrupted Chloe’s routine.
I had never planned to move in immediately.
Julian had never asked.
He chose fear before giving me the truth.
A hospital social worker interrupted us. Because Chloe’s X-ray showed a previously untreated fracture, the hospital was required to make a child-protection report.
Julian’s attention snapped back to his daughter.
“My mother said it was a sprain. Chloe fell six weeks ago while I was in New York.”
“Did a doctor examine her?”
“Eleanor said the swelling went down.”
The social worker asked where Chloe had been injured that day.
Julian repeated what the school secretary had told him: Chloe fell from the playground equipment during an afternoon activity.
The secretary called again while we were speaking.

Eleanor had reported her absent with a stomachache shortly before calling Julian to say there had been an accident.
