Chapter 6 - The Secret Signal Failed
Two weeks earlier, Laurel had finally created a plan.
If Cole scared Eli while she was away, Eli was supposed to call her and say, “Can Grandpa bring my blue backpack?”
It meant Walter should come immediately.
Eli had forgotten the sentence.
Yesterday he had simply told the truth.
“He’s hitting me again.”
Walter stood from the table.
“You knew enough to create a code?”
“I knew Cole was getting worse.”
“And you still left Eli alone with him.”
Laurel began crying.
Walter did not soften.
“I couldn’t miss another shift. I’d already been warned about attendance.”
“So you risked your five-year-old because you needed the paycheck to leave the man hurting him?”
“Yes.”
The answer was awful.
It was also true.
Walter walked to the window.
“You could’ve left Eli with me.”
“Cole would’ve known.”
“So?”
“I was still trying to leave without him realizing I was leaving.”
Walter turned.
“That plan protected your exit.”
Laurel’s face crumpled.
“Not Eli.”
“No.”
She whispered it herself.
Walter heard movement behind him.
Eli stood in the hallway.
Laurel wiped her face quickly.
“Hey, baby.”
Eli looked at his mother.
“Can I stay with Grandpa?”
Laurel closed her eyes for one second.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.”
Walter had expected her to fight.
To insist she was still his mother.
To explain herself.
Instead Laurel knelt several feet away from Eli.
“You can stay here as long as you need to feel safe.”
Eli said nothing.
But he stopped hiding behind the wall.
That afternoon Laurel contacted a domestic-violence advocacy organization through the clinic social worker.
Walter almost objected.
Cole had never seriously assaulted Laurel.
The advocate explained that coercive control, financial manipulation, intimidation and threats could exist without visible injuries.
But the advocate told Laurel something equally important.
Being afraid of Cole did not erase her responsibility to protect Eli.
Laurel accepted that.
Then the social worker called Walter.

The county wanted a formal interview with Eli the next morning.
And they wanted Walter to understand that temporary family placement did not automatically mean he would remain there.
