Chapter 12 - The Dinner Where Nobody Was Allowed to Pretend
Three months after the garage incident, Walter invited Laurel to dinner.
Eli agreed.
The social worker approved the visit.
No professional sat at the table.
Walter remained responsible for Eli’s safety.
Laurel brought macaroni and cheese from the grocery deli because it was one of the few things Eli reliably ate.
They made it halfway through dinner before Eli asked the question.
“Is Cole still at our house?”
Laurel put down her fork.
“No.”
Cole had moved out after a negotiated agreement resolving occupancy while other financial disputes remained.
“Is he coming back?”
“No.”
Eli looked at Walter.
“Grandpa says people can lie.”
Laurel glanced at her father.
Walter did not apologize for teaching him that.
Laurel nodded.
“They can.”
“Are you lying?”
“No.”
“How do I know?”
The question was so simple Walter nearly interrupted.
Laurel stopped him with one look.
Then she answered.
“You don’t know yet.”
Eli frowned.
“I want you to believe me someday. But I don’t get to tell you when.”
Walter looked down at his plate.
Laurel continued.
“I should’ve stopped Cole. Every time. I didn’t.”
Eli picked at his food.
“Were you scared?”
“Yes.”
“More scared than me?”
Laurel’s face tightened.
“I don’t know.”
Eli thought about that.
Then he said, “I was really scared.”
“I know.”
“No. You didn’t.”
Laurel inhaled sharply.
“You’re right.”
No excuse followed.
No speech about how hard her life had been.
Walter understood why the social worker had warned him about punishment disguised as protection.
Laurel needed to hear her son’s anger without Walter rescuing either of them from it.
After dinner Eli brought his plate to the sink.
Laurel stood.
“Can I hug you goodbye?”
Eli hesitated.
Then shook his head.
“Okay.”
She left without asking again.
At the front door, Walter followed her.
Laurel whispered, “That was awful.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“But he talked to me.”

“That’s why it mattered.”
