Chapter 6 - THE WIFE GRANT THOUGHT HE WAS SUPPORTING

Grant called three relatives that evening.
By morning, Claire was apparently a gold digger.
The phrase was so absurd Lila laughed when she heard it.
Claire did not.
Because inside the Bennett family, it made emotional sense.
Grant believed Ryan had purchased the penthouse.
Grant believed Bennett money funded the dinners.
Grant believed Ryan’s career was subsidizing Claire’s lifestyle while Claire ran what he once called “that event-planning hobby.”
Somebody had built an entire alternate financial biography for her.
Diane contributed to it too.
Claire found that out through an aunt who called trying to “mediate.”
“Diane said Ryan put you into business.”
Claire went still.
“What?”
“She said his connections got Verity House off the ground.”
Claire almost hung up.
Verity House existed eight years before Claire met Ryan.
She had sold controlling interest before their first date.
Ryan had attended the closing dinner as her new boyfriend.
He knew.
After the call, Claire sat in the hotel room and tried to understand why her husband would do something so unnecessary.
He had not stolen her career.
Not publicly.
Only inside his family.
Then Brooke sent a message.
You need to stop talking to Dad before you give him a heart attack.
Claire replied.
Why does he think Ryan financed my company?
No answer.
Claire sent another.
Why does he think Ryan owns the penthouse?
This time Brooke answered.
That’s complicated.
Claire called.
Brooke picked up after the first ring.
“What is complicated?”
Brooke exhaled.
“Ryan didn’t want Dad treating him like he’d married up.”
Claire stared out at snow covering the hotel courtyard.
“So he told your father he financed me?”
“He never said exactly that.”
“What did he say?”
“That he’d helped you scale.”
“He met me after I sold the company.”
“I know.”
“And you let your father believe it?”
Brooke became defensive.
“Dad is impossible about money.”
“So you lied.”
“I didn’t lie.”
Claire nearly laughed.
“No. You just stood next to one.”
That sounded familiar.
Diane at the dinner table.
Brooke with her phone lowered.
Ryan behind Claire holding her wrists.
The entire family specialized in being adjacent to wrongdoing without naming themselves participants.
Brooke said, “You don’t understand what Dad does to Ryan when he thinks Ryan needs someone.”
Claire thought about Grant pressing a cigarette against her gown.
“No. I understand what Grant does when he thinks somebody is beneath him.”
Brooke went quiet.
Claire continued.
“Did you know about the bank guarantee?”
“No.”
The answer came immediately.
Claire believed it.
“Did you know about BH Strategic Reserve?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Not all of it.”
“What did you think it was?”
“Ryan said you agreed to help stabilize Dad’s company until the hotel refinance closed.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Another partial truth.
Years earlier, Claire had agreed to a one-time $150,000 short-term loan to Bennett Heritage during a renovation delay.
It had been repaid.
Apparently Ryan had transformed that single act into standing consent.
Brooke said something else before hanging up.
“Claire, if Dad learns how bad the company really is, this is going to destroy him.”
That was the first time Claire heard the truth without the word family wrapped around it.
Bennett Heritage was not simply tight on cash.
May you like
It was in trouble.
And Ryan had been using Claire to make sure Grant never knew how much.
