Chapter 10 - WHY RYAN NEEDED CLAIRE TO LOOK DEPENDENT
The major twist came from Diane.
She asked to meet Claire alone.
Claire almost refused.
Then Diane sent one sentence.
Ryan didn’t start lying about your money because of Grant. I asked him to.
They met in a quiet restaurant near Washington Park.
Diane looked nothing like the woman who sat silently at Claire’s table on New Year’s Eve.
No champagne gown.
No diamonds.
Just a beige coat and a face that looked ten years older.
Claire sat down.
“Talk.”
Diane folded her hands.
“When Ryan first brought you home, Grant hated that you were more successful.”
Claire said nothing.
“He didn’t dislike you personally at first.”
“That’s comforting.”
Diane winced.
“He thought Ryan would disappear into your life.”
“What does that mean?”
“That people would start saying Ryan married money.”
Claire almost laughed at the irony.
Diane continued.
“Grant had spent Ryan’s whole childhood telling him he would inherit Bennett Heritage and expand it. Then Ryan met you. You had already sold your company. You had the penthouse. You had investments. Grant started calling him Mr. Claire Bennett.”
Claire felt something cold move through her.
“Ryan never told me.”
“No.”
Diane looked down.
“I told him to stop discussing your money with Grant.”
“That is not what happened.”
“No.”
Diane swallowed.
“I told him to make Grant believe the marriage was more balanced.”
Claire stared.
“How?”
“At first, little things. Say the penthouse was a joint decision. Let Grant think you built Verity House partly through Ryan’s connections. Don’t correct him every time.”
Claire felt sick.
Diane had not simply watched the false story grow.
She planted it.
“Why?”
“Because Grant was brutal with Ryan.”
“So you made me smaller.”
Diane’s eyes filled.
“I told myself it was harmless because you knew what you had.”
Claire thought of the cigarette.
“Grant needed to believe I didn’t.”
Diane looked away.
That was the twist.
Ryan’s financial fraud had grown from an emotional lie created years earlier.
To protect Ryan’s status inside the Bennett family, Diane encouraged him to present Claire as less independently successful than she was.
The lie worked.
Grant respected Ryan again.
Then Bennett Heritage weakened.
Ryan faced a new problem.
He had spent years telling Grant the marriage made him stronger financially without admitting the strength belonged to Claire.
So Ryan began routing Claire’s money through Bennett structures.
Not just to save the company.
To make the old lie materially true.
Claire’s money became Ryan’s apparent contributions.
Claire’s assets became “family-controlled.”
Claire’s penthouse became Ryan’s.
Every new deception served the original one.
And New Year’s Eve?
Grant ordered Claire around because he genuinely believed she lived inside a world his son provided.
When Claire corrected him publicly, she did more than embarrass an arrogant old man.
She threatened years of carefully maintained family mythology.
Diane whispered, “I never thought Grant would touch you.”
Claire looked at her.
“You watched.”
Diane began crying.
Claire did not comfort her.
