Chapter 14 - The Last Time Dustin Asked Me to Save Him

Dustin came to see me alone.

He did not come to my house.

He waited outside a diner where I ate breakfast every Thursday.

I almost kept walking.

Then I saw his hands.

No gloves.

No performance.

Just a twenty-seven-year-old man who looked older than he had six weeks earlier.

“I need five minutes.”

“You need Hannah's permission for anything involving Hannah.”

“This is about me.”

That nearly made me laugh.

We sat outside.

He told me no major gym would sign him while the investigation remained unresolved.

His savings were low.

Sponsors were gone.

He had started working mornings at a warehouse owned by his uncle.

Then he asked me to speak publicly for him.

Not to defend what he did.

To say I did not believe he was beyond redemption.

“Why me?”

“People listen to you.”

There it was.

The same thing everyone had been doing from the beginning.

Using reputation.

Pierce used Dustin's.

The gym used Pierce's.

Hannah feared mine.

Now Dustin wanted it too.

“No.”

He looked down.

“You trained Marines who screwed up.”

“I trained Marines who were accountable to a system bigger than themselves.”

“What am I supposed to do?”

It was the wrong question.

Or maybe finally the right one.

“Stop asking people you hurt to design your rehabilitation.”

He stared at me.

I continued.

“Pay Hannah back. Follow every court order. Do the counseling your attorney says you're already considering because you need it, not because it looks good. Work. Stay away when she asks you to stay away. If you ever fight professionally again, earn that separately.”

He looked disappointed.

He had hoped for a shortcut.

I recognized that impulse.

I had spent years solving problems by becoming the strongest person in the room.

Hannah had forced me to see how easily protection could become control when the protected person lost a voice.

Before Dustin left, he asked one last question.

“Does she hate me?”

I could have answered.

I didn't.

“Ask yourself why you still think you're entitled to know.”

He walked away.

That afternoon Hannah received the final settlement draft.

Dustin had accepted her wording.

He would repay the remaining disputed funds over time, subject to the separate bank adjustments and legal process.

Nothing in the agreement erased the assault investigation.

Nothing required Hannah to protect his reputation.

She signed.

Then she did something I didn't expect.

She removed my name as her emergency financial contact.

For one second, it hurt.

Then she handed me the updated form.

Her best friend, Melissa, was listed instead.

“I love you,” she said.

“I know.”

“But I need some parts of my life to stop depending on men who think protecting me means taking over.”

I nodded.

That included Dustin.

Pierce.

And me.

May you like

It was not the ending I would have chosen for my role in her life.

Which was exactly why it was the right one.
