Chapter 10 - The Reason Pierce Protected Dustin
Pierce finally agreed to speak directly with Hannah in the presence of attorneys.
No gym.
No fighters.
No shouting.
He looked older than he had on the blue mat.
Hannah asked him the question first.
“If you knew Dustin was getting out of control, why did you keep protecting him?”
Pierce did not answer immediately.
Then he told us about the year before.
Iron Harbor MMA almost closed.
A former investor pulled out.
Membership dropped.
Two professional fighters left for larger camps.
Pierce mortgaged his house.
Still not enough.
Then Dustin started winning.
Three finishes in five fights.
Online attention.
Local sponsors.
Ticket sales.
Young fighters began joining because Dustin trained there.
He became the gym's economic center.
Not officially.
Practically.
“If Dustin left,” Pierce said, “I thought the place would collapse.”
“So you protected him.”
“Yes.”
“From me?”
“From consequences.”
The distinction was brutal in its honesty.
Pierce explained Nashville.
He knew Dustin had grabbed Hannah.
He knew it was wrong.
He also knew a police report or public accusation could destroy the fight contract they desperately needed.
So he minimized it.
Then he began documenting Hannah’s behavior too.
Not because he thought she was unstable.
Because if she later accused Dustin publicly, Pierce wanted a record suggesting their relationship had been mutually volatile.
Hannah looked stunned.
Pierce lowered his eyes.
“I told myself I was protecting twenty people from losing their jobs.”
I thought immediately of the coach pointing toward the exit.
Walk away before you leave on a stretcher.
It had sounded like arrogance.
Now I understood another layer.
Pierce knew who I was because Hannah had mentioned me repeatedly after Nashville.
She told him her father was a retired Marine instructor and that if I ever discovered what Dustin had done, I would come straight to the gym.
Pierce had prepared for me before I ever walked through the door.
That explained the first clue.
Then the second.
Why the fighters went quiet.
Several had seen Dustin mistreat Hannah.
They had also heard Pierce repeatedly describe the relationship as “messy on both sides.”
Then the third.
Why Pierce closed the portal.
Not because it proved he stole Hannah’s inheritance.
Because it showed how financially dependent the gym had become on Dustin’s success.
Every strange piece now connected.
Pierce had not built the entire problem.
He had allowed the problem to grow because confronting Dustin threatened the institution Pierce had sacrificed his own home to save.
Hannah leaned forward.
“You were willing to let me become the cost of keeping your gym open.”
Pierce looked directly at her.
“Yes.”
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
He did not excuse it.
That was almost harder to hear.
Then Pierce added something that changed what came next.
“I terminated Dustin's membership this morning.”
Hannah stared at him.
