Chapter 12 - The Conversation Evan Refused to Finish for Her

Natalie enrolled in a debt-management consultation.

She hated it.

Diane knew because Natalie called afterward and complained about every recommendation.

Sell the house if the hardship modification failed.

Reduce discretionary spending.

Close unused credit accounts.

Take additional work.

Stop borrowing from family.

Then something unusual happened.

Natalie followed the advice anyway.

Not perfectly.

Not gracefully.

But she followed it.

Evan remained separated.

When Natalie asked him to attend marriage counseling, he agreed to one session.

Only one.

Diane learned about it because Natalie showed up afterward at her house.

She stayed on the porch.

That mattered.

“How did it go?” Diane asked.

Natalie looked exhausted.

“He said he doesn’t trust me.”

“Do you blame him?”

Natalie flinched.

“No.”

They stood in silence.

Then Natalie said, “He said something about Dad.”

Diane waited.

“He said Dad always made me feel like needing help was normal. But admitting I’d failed was shameful.”

Diane looked toward the backyard Paul had spent twenty years maintaining.

That sounded painfully accurate.

“What did you say?”

“I got angry.”

“Then?”

“I realized he was right.”

Diane had spent weeks waiting for dramatic remorse.

It had not come.

Instead, accountability appeared in smaller humiliations.

Natalie accepting a cheaper phone plan.

Taking freelance drafting work beneath the professional level she once bragged about.

Letting the SUV go.

Answering creditor calls instead of forwarding them to Diane.

But one issue remained.

The fraudulent loan application.

Diane still had not decided whether to make a formal police report.

Karen reminded her that the lender had documented the attempted fraud regardless.

Doing nothing would not erase the record.

Doing something might permanently alter her relationship with her daughter.

Natalie knew the decision was coming.

And neither woman could avoid it much longer.
