Chapter 10 - The Person Who Had Been Repaying Diane
Evan came over that evening.
He recognized the check immediately.
“I thought you cashed this.”
“I never saw it.”
His expression tightened.
“I gave it to Natalie to bring you.”
Diane looked toward the black binder.
For years, Natalie had insisted Evan resented every dollar Diane gave them.
That he never appreciated Diane.
That he believed Diane interfered in their marriage.
Some of that had been true.
But not all of it.
Evan had been quietly trying to repay her.
There had been three previous payments.
Diane checked her deposits.
All three had arrived.
Each time Natalie had told her the money came from her.
Natalie had accepted credit for Evan’s repayment.
The unopened fourth check had apparently been intercepted after their marriage began collapsing.
Now the larger pattern became clear.
The duplicate rescues.
The secret loan application.
Natalie’s terror of losing status.
Her insistence that Evan “abandoned” her.
Evan had not walked out because one irresponsible woman spent too much money.
For years, he had participated in the same rescue cycle Diane had.
He covered debts.
Refinanced balances.
Repaid Diane.
Protected Natalie from embarrassment.
Then he found the loan application using Diane’s identity.
He confronted Natalie.
According to Evan, her response had ended the marriage.
“She said you would forgive her.”
Diane looked at him.
“That’s why you left?”
“That’s when I understood she believed forgiveness was the same thing as permission.”
Diane felt the words settle.
Her daughter’s worst behavior had not grown in spite of twenty years of rescue.
Part of it had grown because rescue had always arrived before consequences.
