Chapter 12 - The Things They Finally Said Without Hiding

Alejandro agreed to mediation only after two collectors threatened separate claims against Vega Fine Arts.
He arrived with two attorneys.
Celeste came with one.
Mariana sat beside Rachel.
Rosa attended only because Mariana asked her to.
No cameras.
No audience.
No auction stage.
Alejandro looked smaller without one.
He spoke first.
“I never forced Mariana to do anything.”
Mariana looked at him.
“You bought my mother's debt.”
“As an investment.”
“After you knew who my father was.”
Alejandro did not answer.
Celeste crossed her arms.
“I paid for the work.”
“You paid Alejandro.”
“You received money.”
“For studio work. Not for my name.”
Alejandro leaned forward.
“Your career was stalled. Mine wasn't. Celeste had market access. You benefited.”
Mariana almost laughed.
“You mean you decided nobody would buy me, then made sure nobody could see me.”
His expression tightened.
For the first time, Rosa understood what Alejandro actually wanted.
Not paintings.
Control over value.
He wanted to decide whose name mattered.
Which history counted.
Which artist was visible.
Which document disappeared behind a gold plaque.
Rosa looked at Celeste.
“And you?”
Celeste's confidence cracked.
“I wanted something that was mine.”
Mariana stared at her.
“So you took mine.”
Celeste looked away.
Then Rosa was forced to answer for herself.
Mariana asked the question she had avoided since the garage.
“Why did you sell Dad's studio without checking what belonged to me?”
Rosa could have said debt.
Grief.
Property taxes.
Fear.
All true.
Instead she gave the harder answer.
“Because I wanted the crisis over more than I wanted to slow down and listen to you.”
Mariana’s eyes filled.
Rosa continued.
“I told myself I was saving our family. I sold pieces of your life because I was afraid of losing the house.”
Alejandro shifted impatiently.
“This is irrelevant.”
Mariana looked directly at him.
“No. This is the whole thing.”
Everyone in the room had protected something by deciding Mariana could absorb the cost.
Her mother protected a house.
Celeste protected an image.
Alejandro protected status and a business.
Mariana finally stood.
May you like
“You're all finished deciding what I'm allowed to lose.”
She walked out of the mediation before any settlement was reached.
