Chapter 1 - The Signature They Tried to Bury

Alejandro Vega ripped the painting from Mariana’s hands before she could carry it off the auction platform.

“Don’t embarrass yourself,” he said under his breath.

Then he turned, smiling for the collectors gathered beneath the glass walls of the Manhattan penthouse, and positioned the canvas beside Celeste Davenport.

“You paint,” he murmured without looking back at Mariana. “She gets the applause.”

Celeste adjusted the skirt of her champagne satin gown and stepped into the photographers’ line of sight as if the thirty-six-by-forty-eight-inch abstract had always belonged to her.

Mariana stood several feet behind them in a plain ivory blouse, paint still embedded beneath two fingernails.

No one looking at the stage would have guessed she had spent six weeks painting the piece.

Rosa Alvarez had entered just in time to hear everything.

She had taken the train from New Jersey because Mariana had stopped answering her calls three days earlier. The invitation to the auction had arrived anonymously in Rosa’s mailbox that morning.

Now she understood why.

“Mariana?”

Her daughter’s face changed.

Not relief.

Fear.

Mariana hurried toward her and shook her head.

“Mom… don’t say my name.”

Rosa stared at her.

Across the room, Celeste lifted a champagne flute while an auction specialist praised the “raw feminine confidence” of her new series.

Alejandro took a polished gold plaque from an assistant and began securing it over the lower edge of the frame.

Rosa saw what he was covering.

A signature.

She stepped onto the platform.

Alejandro blocked her.

“Private event.”

Rosa ignored him and pulled at the plaque.

A deep-burgundy wax mark appeared beneath it.

Then handwritten black paint.

M. Alvarez.

And a date from six years earlier.

Three years before Mariana had ever met Alejandro.

His polished smile disappeared.

“Put that back.”

Rosa turned the frame over.

Beneath the backing paper were several more burgundy auction labels, each carrying Mariana’s initials in her unmistakable handwriting.

Mariana began crying without making a sound.

Celeste moved away from the cameras.

Rosa looked at Alejandro.

“What have you done?”

Mariana finally spoke.

“Those aren’t the paintings he stole.”

Alejandro lunged toward the frame.

Rosa held it against her body.

“What did he steal?”

Mariana looked past them.

“My father’s archive.”
