Chapter 7 - Two People Wanted the Chair to Fail

The technician documented the differences.

The left brake showed fresh wrench marks consistent with a standard adjustable wrench.

The right had narrow impressions from pliers.

Bradley admitted using the small wrench from the estate’s pool-maintenance cabinet.

He said he loosened the left brake while the wheelchair sat under the covered patio.

His plan was reckless and cruel, but specific.

He expected the chair to roll several inches during Harrison’s transfer demonstration.

He believed I would instinctively use my left foot to stop myself.

Then, he said, everyone would know I was hiding recovery.

He had no plan to put me in the pool.

That part came later, after alcohol, humiliation, and Richard’s encouragement.

Still criminal.

Still his choice.

But there had been two separate acts of sabotage.

The estate manager confirmed Richard had entered the covered patio alone shortly after Bradley left.

He carried pliers because a sprinkler head had come loose beside the bar.

Richard claimed he never touched my chair.

The investigator did not accuse him.

Not yet.

Then Vanguard’s forensic team found something else.

Richard had exchanged messages with the bridge lender forty-eight hours before the party.

One read:

If Victoria demonstrates meaningful recovery publicly, we may have an authority problem before refinancing closes.

The lender replied:

Then resolve governance before the event.

Richard answered:

I intend to.

He later claimed that meant preparing board documents.

Maybe it did.

But he had accessed my medical records, knew I was improving, blocked Harrison from reaching me, and was alone near the wheelchair when the second brake was loosened.

For the first time, Bradley stopped defending him.

“He told me you were destroying everything Mom left us,” he said during a second attorney-supervised meeting.

“You shoved me.”

“I know.”

“He didn’t move your hands.”

Bradley looked furious at the sentence because it denied him the easier role of manipulated son.

Good.

I was finished helping men dilute their responsibility by discovering another man behaved worse.

My next decision made the conflict impossible to contain.

I authorized my attorney to provide the brake report, medical-access evidence, and relevant Vanguard messages to police investigators.

And I formally requested that Richard step down as chairman during the corporate review.

If he refused, I would vote to remove him.

May you like

He refused.

The board meeting was scheduled for Friday.
