Chapter 10 - The Accident After the Accident
The major twist came from Vanguard’s internal email archive.
Not because anyone discovered a secret confession.
Because ordinary messages, read in sequence, showed intent.
Two days before the party, Richard emailed Bradley:
If she demonstrates recovery in front of Harrison and the executives, the proxy argument is over.
Bradley answered:
Then maybe everyone should see what she can actually do.
Richard replied:
Make sure they do.
Bradley interpreted that as permission to provoke me.
He loosened the left brake.
But another email had been sent by Richard to the estate manager that morning.
Move Victoria’s chair under the covered patio after her first evaluation. I need privacy with it before the demonstration.
The estate manager assumed Richard wanted to adjust a cushion.
Richard later told investigators he wanted to check whether the chair contained company documents in the storage pouch.
No documents were found there.
The right brake had been loosened with pliers.
The same type Richard carried into the patio.
His goal, according to the investigator’s eventual reconstruction, was likely not to send me into the pool either.
He wanted visible instability.
If the wheelchair rolled unexpectedly and I stopped myself with a recovering leg, he could tell the lender my incapacity was improving while pressuring me to preserve the proxy voluntarily in exchange for keeping my “deception” private.
Bradley took that setup and escalated it into violence.
Father and son had independently sabotaged the same chair for different versions of the same objective.
Control.
The pool shove happened because two men believed my body was evidence they were entitled to manipulate.
Richard still denied touching the brake.
The evidence remained circumstantial.
Then he did something revealing.
He stopped calling Bradley reckless.
Instead, he blamed him entirely.
Bradley finally understood what Richard had done his entire life.
When things succeeded, they were family victories.
When they failed, one child had misunderstood him.
Bradley’s anger turned toward our father.
It changed nothing about what he did to me.
But it ended their alliance.
And that created damage no corporate investigation could neatly resolve.
Bradley agreed to admit loosening the first brake, kicking my brace, releasing both brakes at the pool edge, and shoving the wheelchair.
In return, prosecutors considered his cooperation regarding the wider circumstances.
Richard’s conduct remained under separate review.
