Chapter 14 - The Last Chance to Stop Blaming Emma

The final case conference was not public.

There were no cameras, no extended relatives, and no dramatic audience waiting for Lauren to humiliate anyone.

There was only a long table, three attorneys, two child-safety professionals, Michael, Lauren, Rebecca, and Diane.

The proposed safety plan required Diane to have no direct contact with Emma. Any future reconsideration would depend on Emma’s therapist, Lauren’s consent, and evidence of sustained counseling.

Rebecca would have no contact with Emma and no unsupervised parenting time with Ava and Noah while the separate family assessment continued. She would complete medical-emergency training, individual therapy, and a parenting evaluation.

Both women would acknowledge in writing that Emma had been intentionally given food containing cashew, deprived of access to her medication, and left without adult care during an allergic emergency.

Rebecca read the statement and pushed it away.

“It makes it sound like we wanted her dead.”

“It says what you did,” Michael replied.

Diane picked up the pen.

Rebecca stared at her. “You’re going to let them put all of this on us?”

Diane’s voice was tired. “Who else would it belong to?”

Rebecca looked toward Lauren.

“If I sign, Michael will use it to take my children.”

Michael answered before Lauren could.

“I’m asking for supervision because you left a child who couldn’t breathe. The signature isn’t creating that.”

Rebecca’s fear was real. Her business had lost its largest partnership. Legal expenses were mounting. Ava would not stay overnight with her. Noah asked whether his mother might test food on him too.

None of that allowed her to rewrite Emma as the cause.

Lauren slid Emma’s hospital discharge photograph across the table. Not the worst image. Just Emma sitting upright in bed, eyes swollen, a red allergy band around her wrist.

“You can lose things because of what you did,” Lauren said, “or you can keep losing them because you refuse to name it.”

Rebecca looked at the photograph for a long time.

Then she signed.

The caseworker collected both acknowledgments and attached the final evidence packet.

Outside the building, Lauren did not celebrate.

She called Emma’s therapist and said the adults had finally stopped blaming her.

Behind her, Rebecca and Diane left through different doors.
