Chapter 12 - WHAT EACH OF THEM WAS TRYING TO SAVE

Mark agreed to a supervised family meeting only after his attorney warned that refusing would weaken his claim that the conflict was a misunderstanding.

They met in Marisol’s conference room.

Claire sat beside Evelyn. Paige chose a chair between both sides and immediately seemed to regret it.

Mark looked thinner. Without the truck, business shirts, and constant phone calls, he appeared less powerful but no less defensive.

“I’m sorry she got hurt,” he began.

Evelyn interrupted him.

“You’re sorry Claire came home.”

Mark looked at the table.

“I was trying to get her to understand the consequences.”

“You held my head under freezing water.”

“I lost control.”

“For nearly an hour?”

His mouth tightened.

Claire asked, “What were you protecting?”

“My mother.”

“No. Evelyn had arranged to protect Ruth.”

“I didn’t know if her plan would hold.”

“You knew about the bank review.”

“I knew she was cutting me out.”

Evelyn leaned forward.

“I said yes to Ruth. I never said yes to you.”

Mark’s face flushed.

“You all had savings. Property. Retirement accounts. I had a company collapsing under me and a mother who screamed every time I left her room. Do you know what it’s like to have every person in your life waiting for you to fail?”

Paige’s voice was quiet.

“So you took Grandma Evelyn’s money.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You falsified invoices.”

“I was going to replace it when the spring contracts came through.”

Claire said, “And the will?”

Mark finally looked at her.

“If I became co-executor, I could keep the house from being locked away in some trust while everyone needed it.”

“You mean while you needed it.”

“I kept this family functioning while you avoided every difficult conversation.”

The accusation hurt because it contained truth, but not enough truth to excuse him.

Claire nodded once.

“I avoided things. You abused that. Those aren’t equal.”

Paige slid the storage inventory across the table.

“What’s in the filing cabinets?”

Mark’s reaction was small but immediate. His fingers closed around the edge of his chair.

“Old records.”

“Denise says no.”

Mark stood.

“This meeting is over.”

Marisol told him the storage company had received a preservation notice.

He looked at Claire with open panic.

For the first time, she understood that the cabinets did not contain an explanation.

They contained something he believed could remove his last defense.
