Chapter 10 - THE KINDNESS MARK TURNED INTO A WEAPON
The handwritten instructions changed the meaning of the entire case.
A year before Mark created Harbor Care, Evelyn had met privately with Ruth’s facility administrator. She asked how much it would cost to keep Ruth in the same unit if Mark’s business failed.
She also requested information about creating a restricted care fund that could pay the facility directly without giving Mark control of the money.
The blue memory-care brochures Claire had occasionally found beneath Evelyn’s grocery lists had belonged to Evelyn, not Mark.
The birthday cards addressed to Ruth were not guilt-driven gestures.
The repeated questions Evelyn asked about Ruth’s blue blanket were not confusion. She had been checking whether Mark was actually visiting.
Evelyn had never intended to abandon Ruth.
She had intended to protect her from Mark’s instability.
Marisol obtained notes from Evelyn’s estate-planning meetings. They showed that Evelyn planned to fund Ruth’s care for two additional years if necessary, while placing her own house in a trust benefiting Claire. Mark would have no authority over either arrangement.
He knew a review was coming because Evelyn had told him she was moving all future payments away from Harbor Care.
The bathtub assault had not been a desperate attempt to save Ruth’s room.
It had been an attempt to force Evelyn to sign a new will naming Mark as co-executor before the bank compared the real facility costs with his inflated withdrawals.
Claire sat beside Evelyn in the rehabilitation center.
“You were going to keep helping Ruth?”
“Yes.”
“Even after what she said to you over the years?”
Evelyn folded the edge of the blanket.
“She was cruel when she was well. She’s sick now. Both things can be true.”
Claire looked toward the window.
Mark had told each woman a different version of the others.
He told Evelyn that Claire refused to help Ruth.
He told Claire that Evelyn resented paying for Ruth.
He told Paige that Claire and Evelyn were trying to place Ruth in a public ward.
He kept everyone separated because their compassion was the only resource he could still exploit.
The facility needed an answer by Friday.
Claire could preserve Ruth’s room for another month by drawing from her retirement account, giving the benefits process time to work.
Doing so would protect the woman who had wounded her and indirectly extend the crisis Mark created.
