Chapter 9 - The Company on Peachtree Street
The receivership hearing drew attention.
Magnolia Ridge restored homes for developers, actors, physicians, and old Atlanta families. Its legal fight became business news after a trade publication obtained the public filing.
Clients called.
Employees whispered.
A lender postponed approval for a new equipment loan.
The city preservation office requested reassurance that three active historic projects would not be abandoned.
Laura spent her days moving between construction meetings and attorney conferences while her shoulder healed from the courtroom assault.
Julian used the wider pressure skillfully.
He argued that family conflict had made normal management impossible. Westover, he said, had provided legitimate stabilization funding and deserved protection as a secured creditor. He presented himself not as a husband seeking revenge, but as a professional trying to preserve value.
His reputation made the story plausible.
Maya attacked the conflicts, the disputed waiver, and the hidden ownership.
The judge declined to appoint a full receiver immediately but installed a neutral financial monitor and prohibited extraordinary transfers.
It was not victory.
It kept Julian from taking control before the evidence was reviewed.
The same week, the Georgia State Bar opened a preliminary inquiry after receiving Laura’s complaint and copies of the Westover documents. Julian was not suspended. He remained licensed and working while the investigation proceeded.
He told mutual friends that Laura was trying to destroy his career because he refused to fund her family’s failing company.
Several believed him.
One of Laura’s oldest friends stopped returning calls.
The conflict spread into her marriage history too.
Julian produced emails in which Laura praised his help with Magnolia Ridge. He submitted anniversary cards, photographs, and messages showing affection long after some disputed agreements were signed.
Abuse, conflict, and manipulation did not erase loving days.
They existed beside them.
That made the case harder emotionally, though not legally impossible.
Then Megan contacted Laura.
She brought a laptop Evan had left at their house when she moved out.
“I’m not giving this to punish him,” she said. “I’m giving it because he keeps saying Julian made him sign everything, and I don’t know whether that’s true.”
The laptop contained deleted drafts recovered by the forensic team.
One message from Evan to Julian read:
Laura will never agree. Dad says use the authority she already gave you.
Another said:
Once this is fixed, I want the proxy destroyed.
Julian replied:
Once this is fixed, everyone answers to me until I am made whole.
The messages complicated Evan’s role.
He was not merely a frightened victim.
At first, he had willingly helped exclude Laura.
