Chapter 7 - The Pattern in the Vendor Files
The number connected Julian to the cover-up, but not yet to the original theft.
The vendor files showed that Evan had created three false subcontractor accounts over fourteen months. Company funds were sent to those accounts, then transferred into personal betting accounts and used to cover household debts.
Julian entered later.
He replaced the original contact information, created repayment schedules, and reclassified the missing money as “legal-loss reserves.”
He did not start Evan’s crime.
He found it.
Then he made himself necessary.
Nina and the forensic accountant traced every irregular payment.
The pattern revealed a sequence of escalating control:
First, Julian advised Daniel not to report Evan while repayment remained possible.
Second, he arranged the Westover loan through an entity whose ownership was hidden behind his college roommate.
Third, he persuaded Daniel and Evan to grant voting proxies as security.
Fourth, he inserted consulting fees that continued long after the original two hundred thousand dollars had been repaid.
Fifth, he used Laura’s alleged waiver to prevent her from challenging the conflict.
The company had already paid Westover more than twice the original advance.
Yet Westover still claimed a balance.
Laura recognized Julian’s method from their marriage.
He did not take control in one obvious act.
He created a problem, offered the only acceptable solution, and then made the solution impossible to leave.
The accountant also found a strange monthly payment to a storage facility near Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
Evan claimed he knew nothing about it.
Daniel said it stored archived company records.
Nina had never seen the account.
Laura drove there with Maya and obtained access only after the court issued a preservation order.
Inside the unit were boxes of project files, several pieces of antique hardware, and six framed photographs removed from Magnolia Ridge’s offices.
One showed Caroline Bennett standing in front of the original Decatur garage.
Another showed Laura and Evan as teenagers, both covered in sawdust.
The storage unit was not merely an archive.
Julian had been quietly removing the company’s history from the building while telling Laura the items had been misplaced during renovations.
At the back of the unit sat two locked filing cabinets.
The facility records showed Julian visited the unit three days before filing for divorce.
Laura understood the pattern.
He had been preparing for the legal fight before she knew their marriage was ending.
She told Maya to seek access to the cabinets.
Maya warned that whatever they found might implicate Evan and Daniel further.
