Chapter 8 - VIVIAN’S DEFENSEVivian did not confess.

People like Vivian rarely do.
She reframed.
Through her attorney, she claimed the fake invoices were “administrative substitutions” created because I often performed work informally.
She argued that Mercer Hospitality Services served as a central internal vendor.
She claimed Derek’s transfers were temporary intercompany advances.
She said I had known generally that my event labor was being valued inside foundation budgets.
That last part was technically true.
I knew budgets included event costs.
I did not know invoices with my logo were being fabricated.
Truth is dangerous when mixed with falsehood.
Alicia warned me:
“Don’t say she’s lying about everything. Say exactly where she’s lying.”
So I did.
I produced my genuine invoices.
My accounting software records.
Bank deposits.
Client contracts.
Email threads.
Calendar history.
Vendor confirmations.
Boring evidence.
Beautiful evidence.
Then Vivian attacked my relationship with Charles.
She told family members I had spent years “cultivating” him.
She suggested the deed was compensation for loyalty.
One relative asked me directly whether Charles and I had ever been inappropriate.
I laughed in his face.
Then cried later.
Humiliation lingers even when accusations are ridiculous.
Charles was furious.
I asked him not to fight socially.
“Why?”
“Because every time you defend me emotionally, they’ll say it proves the story.”
He hated that.
He also listened.
Instead, his attorney released nothing publicly.
The deed stood on its own.
Prepared weeks earlier.
Independent witnesses.
Recorded properly.
No unusual secrecy.
No sudden post-assault transfer.
Facts.
Vivian’s social campaign slowly lost energy.
Especially when foundation board members began receiving formal audit findings.
The family stopped asking whether I manipulated Charles.

They started asking where the money went.
Funny how quickly morality improves when spreadsheets arrive.
