I was lying in an ambulance when my husband dragged me onto the sidewalk because his mistress needed my car. He left me there in labor, took my phone and car keys, and sped away.

June left neonatal observation on the sixth day.

Emily could not yet drive, lift more than ten pounds, or climb stairs without pain. Kate moved into the downstairs unit of Emily’s duplex temporarily and slept on the couch beside June’s bassinet.

The first night home, Emily stood in the nursery doorway and looked at the empty space where her father’s rocking chair had been.

Ryan had taken nearly everything necessary to care for a newborn, but he had left the framed ultrasound photograph on the wall.

It was the only item that represented June before she became useful in a custody argument.

Denise requested a visit.

Emily declined.

Denise responded through Marisol, offering to return the rocking chair if Emily withdrew the theft complaint against Bennett Home Care.

Marisol read the message aloud.

“She put that in writing?” Emily asked.

“She believes she’s negotiating.”

“She’s holding my father’s chair hostage.”

“She’s revealing that she sees property, access, and silence as interchangeable.”

The bank recovered twelve thousand dollars from Bennett Home Care’s account before payroll was processed. The remaining $26,500 had already been distributed through transfers authorized by Lila.

Some employees received partial paychecks. Others received nothing.

Ryan blamed Emily.

He sent a company-wide email claiming a “domestic dispute” had caused a bank hold. Denise did not correct him.

Employees began calling Kate’s phone after Ryan shared Emily’s number.

One aide cried because her rent was due.

Another accused Emily of punishing vulnerable clients.

Emily listened until Marisol insisted she stop answering.

The guilt worked because Emily cared about people she had never met. Ryan knew that.

At the temporary custody hearing, the judge reviewed Emily’s medical records, Marcus Hill’s witness statement, photographs of her injuries, and the bank timeline.

Ryan denied dragging her from the vehicle.

He claimed she stepped out voluntarily and left her phone behind.

The judge ordered supervised visits with June at a family center once a week, prohibited Ryan from entering the duplex, and continued the temporary protection order pending a fuller hearing.

It was not the complete separation Emily wanted.

It was also not the immediate custody Ryan had expected.

Outside the courtroom, Denise walked past Emily without looking at June.

Caleb stopped beside the stroller.

“I resigned this morning,” he said.

Emily stared at him.

“Why?”

“Lila asked me to delete the original payroll forecast. Ryan said if I stayed loyal, Mom would make me operations manager.”

“What did you say?”

“That I’d rather lose the company than become him.”

Caleb handed Marisol a sealed flash drive containing payroll exports, vendor lists, and access logs.
