Chapter 12 - WHAT THEY WERE AFRAID TO LOSE

The confrontation occurred in Marisol’s conference room.
Emily sat beside Kate. Ryan sat with his attorney. Denise and Caleb sat together but did not speak.
Lila attended remotely with counsel.
Marisol began with the roadside.
“Ryan, why did you remove Emily from the vehicle?”
“I didn’t remove her. She got out.”
Marcus Hill’s statement lay on the table.
Ryan looked away from it.
“Why did you keep her phone?”
“She left it.”
“Why was her account accessed minutes later?”
“I believed she had agreed to help the company.”
Emily interrupted.
“I said no every time you asked.”
Ryan faced her. “You also said you didn’t want twenty-seven people missing paychecks.”
“That isn’t consent.”
Lila’s voice came through the speaker.
“He told me Emily had approved the transfer but was panicking about the amount.”
Emily looked toward the screen. “Why did you call him baby?”
Lila closed her eyes briefly.
“Because we were together.”
“For how long?”
“Ten months.”
Ryan shifted in his chair.
Lila continued before he could stop her.
“He said the marriage was over except for the baby and the property. He said once June was born, Emily would stay with Kate for a while.”
“And my duplex?”
“He said you would refinance it after maternity leave.”
“I refused that too.”
Lila looked toward her attorney.
“He told me you always refused first.”
The words described Ryan’s entire method.
A boundary was never an answer. It was the beginning of pressure.
Denise finally spoke.
“Ryan told me Emily’s anxiety would become dangerous after delivery. He said I needed a nursery ready.”
“You believed him,” Emily said.
“I wanted to.”
“Why?”
Denise’s eyes filled, but her voice remained steady.
“Because if the company failed, I lost the last thing my husband built. If you left Ryan, I thought I would lose June too. He offered me a story where I kept both.”
Ryan laughed once without humor.
“So now everyone was manipulated?”
“No,” Denise said. “I made choices. I took the crib. I kept the boxes. I accepted money I didn’t question. You lied because you knew what I was willing not to see.”
Ryan turned toward his mother.
“You told me to do whatever it took to cover payroll.”
“I did.”
The admission changed the room.
Denise had not ordered the assault or the account transfer.
She had authorized desperation and refused to ask how it would look in practice.
Emily asked Ryan the only question that still mattered.
“When you left me there, what were you protecting?”
He rubbed his palms against his trousers.
“The clients’ accounts. The company. Mom’s house.”
“And Lila?”
He did not answer.
“And me?”
Ryan looked at June’s photograph on Emily’s file.
“I thought I could fix it afterward.”
That was what he had truly protected.
Not the company.
Not his mother.
May you like
Not even Lila.
He had protected his belief that Emily would always remain available for the repair.
