Chapter 5 - WHAT MARGARET WANTED EMILY TO LOOK LIKE

The toxicology results came two days later.

The hospital could identify several broad components in the liquid.

Alcohol.

Sweetener.

Concentrated plant-derived substances with sedating effects.

The mixture was not a standard medication.

It was not recommended during pregnancy.

The physician could not say what dose Margaret intended or exactly what effect she expected.

Ryan’s attorney warned them not to speculate.

Emily did not need speculation.

She had something better.

Messages.

For weeks, Margaret had been texting Ryan about her.

Emily is getting increasingly irrational.

She shouldn’t be alone this close to delivery.

She keeps changing her mind.

I’m worried she’ll make a reckless decision when labor starts.

Ryan had responded to several.

Keep an eye on her.

Thanks for being there.

Tell me if she gets worse.

Reading his own words made him nauseated.

Emily sat beside him.

“You believed her.”

“I believed you were stressed.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“No.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“But I let her turn one into the other.”

Then Jessica found the message that mattered most.

It was sent the afternoon before the incident.

Margaret:

If Emily refuses to listen tomorrow, I’ll make sure she’s calm before we talk.

Ryan had replied with a thumbs-up.

He stared at the screen.

Emily looked away.

“I thought she meant talk her down.”

“I know.”

“That doesn’t help.”

“I know.”

Ryan had no defense.

Jessica asked:

“What was supposed to happen tomorrow?”

Emily answered.

“I was going to tell Margaret she wasn’t coming to the hospital.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You hadn’t told me.”

“I was waiting until you got home.”

Emily explained.

Margaret had been planning herself into the birth for months.

She wanted access to the delivery suite.

Wanted to stay in their house after the baby arrived.

Wanted to control visitors.

Emily finally decided she wanted only Ryan and her own sister at the hospital.

Afterward, no overnight guests for two weeks.

Margaret had called that cruel.

The day Ryan traveled back from Chicago, Margaret arrived uninvited.

She told Emily they needed to “settle this before Ryan came home.”

Then produced the jar.

Ryan stared at the messages again.

“What did she think would happen after you drank it?”

Emily answered quietly:

“She’d tell you I was having another episode.”

Jessica nodded.

Exactly.

Not poison.

Not murder.

Something Margaret considered far more reasonable.

Make Emily subdued.

Make her easier to direct.

Then present the result as proof she needed supervision.

Jessica had lived that pattern before.

The hidden truth was beginning to surface.

Margaret did not simply want access to her grandchild.

She wanted Ryan to believe Emily could not safely manage without her.
