Chapter 11 - THE CHILD MARGARET CALLED DIFFICULT WAS FINALLY BELIEVED

Jessica’s anger did not disappear because Ryan believed her.

It got worse.

For two weeks she barely answered his calls.

When they finally met, Ryan asked:

“What did I do?”

Jessica laughed.

“You want a list?”

He deserved that.

She continued:

“You get to discover Mom did this and suddenly you’re devastated.”

“I am.”

“I lived it.”

Ryan looked down.

Jessica’s voice broke.

“And every time I tried to tell you, you explained her to me.”

Ryan did not defend himself.

That was the only useful thing he could do.

“You’re right.”

Jessica stared.

“I hate when you say that.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you to say it twenty years ago.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Another pause.

“But maybe someday.”

The relationship remained damaged.

That was realistic.

Truth did not refund decades.

Emily had her own reckoning with Ryan.

“You kept asking whether your mother meant harm.”

Ryan sat across from her bedroom chair.

“I thought intent mattered.”

“It does.”

Emily looked at him.

“But not before impact.”

He nodded.

She continued:

“If you spend ten years asking whether someone meant to control you, they get ten years of control.”

Ryan absorbed that.

Meanwhile, Margaret hired counsel.

She denied criminal intent.

She maintained that the preparation was a traditional family remedy and that she had never intended to injure Emily or Jessica.

That argument might matter legally.

Emotionally, it changed little.

The county prosecutor reviewing Emily’s report considered possible charges related to unwanted physical contact and administering or attempting to administer an unknown substance.

No one promised an outcome.

Ryan stopped expecting dramatic justice.

He focused on what he could control.

Margaret no longer had access to the house.

No access to Emily’s medical information.

No role in financial management.

No direct contact with Emily.

No unsupervised access to the baby after birth unless Emily later chose otherwise.

Margaret sent Ryan one message through her attorney:

You are letting fear destroy this family.

Ryan read it.

Then laughed once.

His mother had spent decades calling other people’s boundaries fear.

Now she finally had to live outside them.
