Chapter 14 - THE LAST TIME GRANT ASKED MARA TO SAVE HIM
Seven months after the hotel, Grant asked Mara for money.
Not through manipulation.
Not through Ellie.
Directly.
His development-company guarantees had reached settlement negotiations.
He faced selling his remaining investment property and possibly filing personal bankruptcy if negotiations failed.
They met with attorneys present.
“I need a loan.”
Mara almost laughed at the absurdity.
“From me?”
“Yes.”
“Why would I do that?”
Grant looked humiliated.
“To avoid bankruptcy.”
“That answers why you want it.”
He nodded.
Years earlier, Mara would have helped.
Not because Grant deserved it.
Because Kingsleys fixed problems.
Because public bankruptcy would embarrass Ellie.
Because financial collapse frightened Mara.
Because calling the family office was easy.
Grant knew that version of her.
He had built part of his entire marriage around it.
This time she asked:
“What happens if I say no?”
“I sell what I have. Negotiate. Maybe file.”
“Will Ellie lose food?”
“No.”
“Healthcare?”
“No.”
“School?”
“No.”
“A safe place with you?”
Grant hesitated.
“No. I can afford an apartment.”
Mara nodded.
“Then my answer is no.”
Grant’s face hardened instinctively.
Then softened.
He understood.
“This is punishment.”
“No.”
“It feels like it.”
“I believe you.”
That answer disarmed him.
Mara continued.
“I’m not preventing you from surviving consequences that do not endanger Ellie.”
Grant looked at the table.
For the first time, Mara saw something close to shame without anger covering it.
“I really did hate needing anything from your family.”
“I know.”
“And I ended up designing my entire life around your family paying.”
“I know.”
He laughed bitterly.
“That’s pathetic.”
Mara did not agree.
She did not comfort him either.
Grant sold the investment property.
Negotiated settlements.
Moved into a two-bedroom rental in Stamford.
The first time Ellie visited, she asked where the pool was.
Grant said:
“There isn't one.”
Ellie considered that.
Then ran toward her new room.
His life got smaller.
His daughter did not love him less.
