Chapter 1 - THE NAME BENEATH HIS

Grant Mercer threw the bills directly at Mara’s feet.

“Take it,” he said. “Buy yourself lunch.”

Several people in the Manhattan hotel lobby turned.

Vanessa Blake stayed wrapped around Grant’s arm, smiling as though the humiliation were part of the entertainment.

“She really knows her place.”

Mara shifted three-year-old Ellie higher against her shoulder.

Her daughter was asleep, warm cheek resting against Mara’s collarbone, completely unaware that her father was standing ten feet away with another woman.

Mara bent.

Grant smiled.

He thought she was picking up the money.

Instead, Mara lifted one bill from the marble floor, folded it once, and placed it on the table beside him.

Then she opened her black handbag.

The small satellite phone inside carried the gold falcon crest of the Kingsley Family Office.

Grant’s smile vanished.

“Don’t make that call.”

Mara looked at him.

That was the first thing he had said all afternoon that sounded frightened.

She pressed the emergency authorization button.

A security officer inside the family office answered immediately.

“Mara Kingsley. Falcon verification seven.”

“Confirmed.”

“Freeze every discretionary account he can access. Suspend household-authorized cards. Remove Grant Mercer from Kingsley properties until counsel reviews his status.”

Grant’s phone started vibrating.

Once.

Twice.

Again.

His arm dropped away from Vanessa.

“Mara.”

She ignored him.

The satellite phone opened the protected incident file automatically.

Grant Mercer.

Access review pending.

Below his name appeared another.

ELLIE MERCER.

Mara stopped.

Her pulse changed.

Why was her three-year-old daughter listed in a security file triggered by Grant?

Grant saw where she was looking.

His face went pale.

Vanessa slowly released his arm.

Mara opened the record.

The first line was partly concealed behind a restricted-family-law flag.

She could see only:

MINOR BENEFICIARY CONTINGENCY—

Grant stepped toward her.

“Give me the phone.”

Mara moved back, keeping Ellie against her.

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Why is Ellie in your file?”

Vanessa looked at Grant.

“Grant?”

He didn’t answer her either.

Mara had spent seven years believing Grant resented her inheritance.

She knew he hated the security protocols.

The family office.

The separate trusts.

The fact that no matter how luxurious their life became, the Kingsley money remained legally outside his control.

She had believed the affair was about ego.

Vanessa was young, admiring, impressed by him rather than by Mara’s last name.

But Grant was not looking at Mara now.

He was looking at the sleeping child in her arms.

And there was something in his expression Mara had never seen before.

Calculation.

The satellite phone unlocked one more line.

PROPOSED GUARDIAN REPRESENTATIVE: GRANT MERCER.

Mara stared at him.

“You were planning for me not to control Ellie’s trust.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Mara, not here.”

She looked around the hotel lobby.

People were already watching.

For once, she didn’t care.

“Then where, Grant?”

He lowered his voice.

“You’re misunderstanding what that file means.”

Mara looked down at Ellie’s name.

May you like

Then at the money scattered across the marble floor.

“No,” she said quietly. “I think I’ve been misunderstanding you.”
