Chapter 3 - THE NINE MISSING DAYS

Helen had spoken to Abigail twice during those nine days.

At least, she thought she had.

The first call lasted forty-three seconds. Abigail sounded tired and said she needed rest after a panic attack. Nicholas took the phone and explained that screens and visitors were making her symptoms worse.

The second call came three days later. Abigail said, “I’m safe, Mom. Please don’t come.”

The voice had been flat, almost mechanical.

Helen had attributed it to medication.

Now Abigail said Nicholas had stood beside her during both calls while a staff member held a clipboard containing the sentences she was expected to repeat.

“If I changed the words, they ended the call.”

Helen sat down carefully.

“You knew I was at Fort Leavenworth for training. Why didn’t you tell me before?”

“I tried.”

Abigail described asking a staff member to contact her mother. She was told Helen had approved the treatment and requested no interruptions until Abigail was cooperative.

Helen’s stomach tightened.

Three months earlier, Nicholas had called while Helen was between briefings. He said Abigail was having severe anxiety, accusing his family of things that did not make sense, and refusing professional help.

Helen remembered saying, “Do whatever keeps her safe.”

She had meant take her to a doctor.

Nicholas had treated the sentence like authorization.

Dr. Patel asked Abigail how she left St. Anne’s.

During a charity wedding hosted on the property, staff shortages left a service corridor unguarded. Abigail took a catering apron, walked through the kitchen, and slipped behind a delivery van leaving the estate.

She jumped out when it slowed near Route 50.

The bruised ribs came from the fall.

The marks around her wrists came from St. Anne’s.

The injury Helen witnessed had come from Nicholas.

Abigail’s voice remained controlled until Dr. Patel asked why she had been taken there.

“I told Nicholas I wanted a divorce.”

Helen felt the answer land between them.

Nicholas had told her Abigail’s panic began after an argument over work. He said nothing about a separation.

“Why did you want to leave him?”

Abigail looked at her mother with an expression Helen knew from childhood—the look she wore when the truth would disappoint someone she loved.

“I found out what happened to his sister.”

Nicholas had one younger sister, Caroline.

The Reed family said she died in college from an accidental overdose fourteen years earlier.

Abigail looked toward the hallway.

“She didn’t die at college.”
