Chapter 14 - THE LAST CHANCE TO CHOOSE A SIDE
Nicholas entered alone.
Evelyn was already seated with St. Anne’s attorneys. She did not turn around.
The licensing hearing focused on the facility’s conduct, not Caroline’s death or the Reed marriage. The hearing officer reminded everyone that criminal responsibility, civil damages, and medical discipline belonged to separate proceedings.
Abigail testified first.
She described the false consent, restricted calls, medication, locked doors, and threats that she would be committed elsewhere if she did not cooperate. She did not exaggerate. She admitted signing the first page and acknowledged her past anxiety treatment.
The details made her credible.
Denise testified next.
Dr. Patel explained the injuries and sedative findings.
Then Nicholas was called.
He paused beside the witness table.
Evelyn finally looked at him.
“You don’t have to destroy what’s left,” she said.
The hearing officer instructed her not to address the witness.
Nicholas sat down.
For several minutes, he answered narrowly. Yes, he signed Abigail’s intake statement. Yes, he restricted her access to her phone. Yes, he instructed staff not to release her.
St. Anne’s attorney asked whether he believed Abigail was unwell.
“I believed she was dangerous to the family.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“It’s the answer.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Nicholas described his own confinement at seventeen and the language staff taught him to use about Caroline. He admitted that when Abigail asked questions, he did not believe she was delusional.
He believed she was getting close.
The attorney asked whether Evelyn ordered him to confine Abigail.
Nicholas looked at his mother.
“She told me to handle my wife before my wife handled us.”
Evelyn stood.
Her lawyer pulled her back into the chair.
Nicholas continued.
“I could’ve said no. I knew what St. Anne’s was. I sent Abigail anyway.”
That sentence mattered more than any attempt to blame Evelyn.
He accepted agency.
Not all of it. Not perfectly.
Enough that accountability could begin.
At the final recess, Nicholas approached Abigail’s attorney rather than Abigail.
“I’ll sign the statement without conditions.”
Abigail heard him but did not respond.
The hearing officer returned and announced that the evidentiary record was closed.

The family version had lost its last loyal witness.
