CHAPTER 5

CHAPTER 5
The protective order was granted that afternoon.
Caleb was barred from the hospital, our home, my accounts, and Emma’s school.
When Lauren told Emma she could visit me safely, my daughter arrived holding a crumpled drawing of the three of us.
Except Caleb was not in it.
It was me, Emma, and Lauren standing under a yellow sun.
I looked at the empty space beside us and felt my heart split.
“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “why didn’t you draw Dad?”
Emma climbed carefully onto the chair beside my bed.
“Because when he’s there, the sun feels different.”
I turned my face away before she saw how badly that hurt.
Lauren sat behind her, eyes shining.
Emma touched the edge of my cast.
“Are you coming home?”
“Yes,” I said. “But not to the same kind of home.”
She looked confused.
I took her small hand.
“Your dad can’t come near us right now.”
She did not cry.
She did not ask why.
She just nodded.
That told me everything.
Children should not understand relief that quickly.
Later that evening, Officer Grant returned.
They had arrested Caleb after he tried to enter the hospital through a service hallway using an old visitor badge.
He told security he needed to “collect his wife.”
His wife.
Like I was luggage.
Like I was property left behind.
When they searched his car, they found a suitcase with my jewelry, Emma’s birth certificate, my passport, and a folder labeled SETTLEMENT.
Inside were forms authorizing payment into an account under Caleb’s business name.
Daniel looked at me after hearing the report.
“This is bigger than domestic assault now.”
I did not feel triumphant.
I felt tired in a way sleep could not fix.
Sarah adjusted my blanket and said softly, “You’re safe tonight.”
I looked at my daughter asleep in the recliner, her cheek pressed against Lauren’s sweater.
Safe tonight.
It sounded small.
But after years of surviving one evening at a time, it felt like a miracle.
At midnight, I asked Daniel for one more document.
Divorce petition.
He looked surprised.
“Are you sure you want to do this while you’re still recovering?”
I looked down at my broken legs.
May you like
Then at the bruises Caleb had left on top of injuries he had not caused but had tried to use.
“I’m recovering because I’m doing this.”
