CHAPTER 3

CHAPTER 3

After they removed Caleb, I started shaking so hard Sarah had to hold my hand.

“I’m sorry,” I kept saying.

Sarah’s eyes softened.

“You don’t need to apologize.”

But I did.

I was sorry my body was broken.

Sorry I had stayed so long.

Sorry Emma had grown up learning the sound of her father’s anger through closed doors.

Sorry it took a hospital bed for me to understand I was not married to a difficult man.

I was trapped with a dangerous one.

Dr. Lawson examined my ribs, my arm, and the fresh swelling near my stomach where Caleb had struck me. His jaw tightened, but his voice remained gentle.

“We need to document everything.”

I nodded.

“Will he be allowed back in?”

“No,” Sarah said immediately. “Not without your permission.”

That sentence almost broke me.

Permission.

I had forgotten what it felt like to have any.

A police officer arrived an hour later. Her name was Officer Maribel Grant, and she pulled a chair beside my bed instead of standing over me.

“Take your time,” she said.

So I told her.

Not just about the hospital room.

About the years before it.

The way Caleb controlled money after I left accounting to raise Emma.

The way he called me lazy if dinner was late.

The way he punched walls but never himself.

The way he smiled in public and punished me later for making him “look bad.”

The way I had been too ashamed to admit that my marriage had become a place I survived instead of lived.

Officer Grant wrote everything down.

Then she asked, “Do you have somewhere safe for your daughter?”

My heart slammed.

“Emma is with my sister, Lauren.”

“How old is she?”

“Ten.”

“Has he ever hurt her?”

“No,” I said quickly.

Then I stopped.

Because the truth was more complicated.

“He’s never hit her,” I whispered. “But she’s afraid of him.”

Officer Grant nodded like she understood the difference.

Sarah stayed beside me until the officer left. Then she hesitated.

“Rebecca, there’s something else.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Your husband came by yesterday while you were asleep.”

I stared at her.

“He told the charge nurse he had medical power of attorney and wanted you discharged to home care.”

Cold spread through me.

“I never signed that.”

May you like

Sarah’s face became grave.

“That’s why we didn’t release you.”
