Chapter 7 - The Pattern in Carmen’s Notebook

Our attorney’s name was Allison Park.
She was in her forties, direct, patient, and completely uninterested in family mythology.
She read Carmen’s notebook twice.
“This isn’t a custody case,” she said.
I had expected the sentence to calm me.
It didn’t.
“What is it?”
“At this point? Evidence of somebody thinking about one.”
Jessica leaned forward.
“Could Carmen actually get custody of Olivia?”
“Not because she dislikes you.”
Allison explained that Arizona law did not allow a grandparent to simply take a child because a parent traveled or because a grandmother thought she deserved more time.
Legal standards mattered.
Facts mattered.
Carmen’s actual circumstances mattered.
“But,” Allison added, tapping the notebook, “people sometimes start trying to create facts they wish existed.”
There it was.
She pointed to the dates.
June 19 — Refused Olivia overnight.
June 27 — Accused me again.
July 8 — Z traveling. Jessica agitated.
August 2 — Threatened to tell Z.
“These aren’t financial records,” Allison said. “They read like behavioral documentation.”
Jessica gave a humorless laugh.
“She was writing a case.”
“Maybe. We need more before assuming purpose.”
That was the kind of sentence I needed.
Not certainty.
Evidence.
We went through the notebook line by line.
Three dates matched large withdrawals.
Four matched arguments Jessica remembered having with Carmen.
Two matched my business trips.
Every entry became harsher as Jessica got closer to telling me about the reserve account.
The pattern was obvious.
Whenever Jessica limited Carmen’s money or access to Olivia, Carmen recorded Jessica as unstable.
The dinner had been the largest attempt yet.
Twenty adults.
My absence planned in advance.
Jessica isolated without a phone or car keys.
Olivia brought into the conflict.
Carmen had not needed Jessica to actually be unstable.
She only needed enough people willing to say she had looked that way.
Then Meredith forwarded Jessica an email.
It was Carmen’s invitation.
The subject line read:
Friday Family Dinner — Need Your Support.
Most of the message sounded ordinary until the final paragraph.
Jessica has been under significant stress lately. Zayden and I are concerned about how she is managing the household and Olivia. Please do not confront her. Simply observe and help keep the evening calm.
I read the words several times.
There was my name.
Used as permission.
Jessica looked at me.
“She made you part of it.”
I nodded.
For years, Carmen had used my silence as agreement.
This time she had put it in writing.
That afternoon I canceled her access to the reserve account.
I removed her from Olivia’s authorized school-pickup list.
I requested new locks.
And I texted my mother one sentence.
You do not come to my home, Olivia’s school, or Jessica’s workplace until we resolve this.
Her response came immediately.
Jessica finally got what she wanted.
I stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
Don’t expect me to stay quiet while she takes my family away.
I showed Allison.
She read it once.
“Save that.”
I did.

Because my mother had just confirmed what the money records alone never could.
This was about possession.
