Chapter 12 - What Carmen Was Really Afraid Of

We met Carmen in Allison’s conference room.
Her attorney sat beside her.
Jessica sat beside me.
Carmen wore navy instead of red. No pearls.
She looked older than she had a week earlier.
For a second I wanted to hug her.
Then I remembered Olivia holding out her red hands.
Carmen started before anyone else could.
“I never meant for Olivia to get hurt.”
Jessica said nothing.
“I did not burn her.”
“No,” I said. “You made a five-year-old believe she had to work for food.”
Carmen’s mouth tightened.
“That was a figure of speech.”
“To a five-year-old?”
She looked away.
Allison kept the conversation narrow.
“Why did you invite people to observe Jessica?”
Carmen hesitated.
“I needed people to understand what was happening.”
“What was happening?” Jessica asked.
“You were cutting me out.”
“I stopped overnight visits after you told my daughter she could choose to live with you.”
“I was joking.”
“You were making her responsible for an adult relationship.”
Carmen turned to me.
“Do you see? Every word I say becomes evidence against me.”
I almost answered the old way.
She’s emotional.
She’s grieving.
Give her room.
Instead I said, “You created evidence against Jessica first.”
That stopped her.
Carmen stared at the tabletop.
Then the truth came without drama.
“After your father died, nobody needed me.”
I didn’t move.
She continued.
“You had Jessica. You had Olivia. Your work. Your house. Everybody told me to find hobbies.”
Jessica’s face softened slightly.
Carmen noticed.
“That child wanted me,” she whispered. “When Olivia ran to me, I mattered.”
Jessica spoke quietly.
“You did matter.”
“Then you started taking nights away.”
“Because you undermined us.”
“You were taking her from me.”
“She’s not yours.”
Carmen flinched.
There it was.
The sentence underneath everything.
Not cruelly stated.
Simply true.
Olivia was her granddaughter.
Not her replacement spouse.
Not her second chance at motherhood.
Not proof she still had authority.
Carmen looked at me.
“And you let her decide everything.”
I shook my head.
“No. Jessica and I are Olivia’s parents. We should have been deciding together the whole time. I let you behave like there were three parents because telling you no made me feel guilty.”
Her eyes filled.
“So this is my punishment.”
“No.”
I leaned forward.
“This is the first consequence I didn’t rescue you from.”
Carmen’s attorney asked whether she was prepared to acknowledge that the dinner had been arranged partly to observe and document Jessica.
Carmen took a long time.
Finally she said, “Yes.”
Jessica exhaled.
Then Allison asked the harder question.
“Are you prepared to acknowledge that you deliberately created pressure hoping Jessica would react badly?”
Carmen looked at Jessica.
Then at me.
“No.”
The meeting stalled there.
She could admit the plan.
She still could not admit the cruelty inside it.
When we stood to leave, Carmen said my name.
I turned.
“What do I have to do to see Olivia?”
Jessica’s face tightened.
I answered before she could.
“First you have to stop asking that as though access is the only thing you lost.”
May you like
Carmen’s eyes dropped.
For once, she had no reply.
