Chapter 10 - BONNIE WAS TRYING TO KEEP LIAM IN NEW YORK

Bonnie’s first consultation with the law firm had happened before Liam was born.
Three weeks before.
That changed everything.
She had not sought legal advice because she arrived in Brooklyn and discovered Maya unable to cope.
She had begun preparing before there was anything to discover.
The consultation notes, disclosed through the ongoing family-court process, identified Bonnie’s primary concern:
Son intends to relocate newborn grandchild to Germany for 12–18 months. Grandmother seeks options to preserve relationship / intervene if mother cannot manage.
Maya read the line twice.
“Before the C-section.”
Rachel nodded.
“Before the C-section.”
Another email followed.
Bonnie had written:
Maya has always been fragile under pressure. If David stays abroad and she cannot cope after delivery, I want to know what would be required for Liam to remain here with family.
The emergency surgery provided an opportunity.
David’s absence provided another.
Then Bonnie began manufacturing proof.
Three earlier clues rearranged at once.
The food was not withheld because Bonnie was simply stingy.
She needed photographs of a home that appeared poorly managed.
The cleaning demands were not only cruelty.
She wanted evidence that Maya “could not maintain basic household conditions.”
And Liam’s documents were not being collected for a kidnapping or secret adoption.
Bonnie wanted birth records, medical discharge information, and identifying documents to support a formal family-court strategy if she could establish extraordinary circumstances around Maya’s recovery.
The fourteen thousand dollars added one final layer.
Bonnie used David’s own care fund to pay the professionals helping her build a case that the care fund was necessary because Maya could not function.
David sat motionless.
“She funded it with my money.”
Rachel nodded carefully.
“She used the account available to her.”
Maya looked at him.
“Your mother didn’t panic.”
“No.”
“She planned.”
David closed his eyes.
Bonnie’s comments over the previous year came back differently.
You really want that baby born in New York if you’re just going to drag him overseas?
Maya doesn’t know anyone in Munich.
Babies need grandparents.
You can’t expect me to visit Germany every month.
David had heard emotion.
Bonnie had experienced loss of control.
Then there was the unknown man at the door.
Wes had come New Year’s Eve carrying an envelope containing his investigative summary and photographs for Bonnie’s attorney.
He expected Bonnie to collect them.
He did not know David had flown home.
He did not know the food had been staged until the security footage was preserved.
The frightening final image from the camera had never been the beginning of an abduction.
It was the final delivery in a plan Bonnie had been building before Liam took his first breath.
Maya leaned back carefully.
“What happens to the petition?”
Rachel answered:
“That depends partly on whether Bonnie corrects the factual representations she made.”
David looked toward Liam sleeping against Maya.
“And if she doesn’t?”
“Then we respond with evidence.”
No instant victory.
No magical dismissal.
But the entire logic of Bonnie’s claim had changed.
She had presented herself as the grandmother who stepped in because a crisis appeared.
