Ethan filed for divorce.
Not because his lawyer told him to.
Not because of Northline alone.
And not because he wanted to punish Natalie.
He did it after Ava woke at two in the morning crying because she dreamed Cole was standing beside her bed with her phone.
Ethan sat on the floor beside the guest bed until she fell asleep again.
The next morning, he made the decision.
Natalie received the petition two days later.
She called Ethan immediately.
He did not answer.
Communication moved through an approved parenting application and attorneys.
The temporary parenting arrangement became the next battle.
Natalie wanted Ava returned to the marital home on alternating weeks.
Ethan opposed unsupervised overnight time while the incident involving the slap and Cole’s restraint was under review.
Natalie accused him of weaponizing Ava.
Ethan’s attorney warned him not to overreach.
“Your goal is safety, not winning every hour.”
That distinction shaped the temporary plan.
Natalie could have structured visits.
Cole could not be present.
Ava would continue counseling.

The first visit lasted forty minutes.

“She said you’re trying to take me away.”
Ethan exhaled.
“What did you say?”
“I told her I’m not luggage.”
Despite himself, Ethan smiled.

Ava needed permission to be angry without being rewarded for rejecting her mother.
“You don’t have to choose between us.”
“She made me choose that day.”
Ethan had no clean answer.
Meanwhile, the company review became more serious.
Cole resigned before Mercer Residential could terminate him.
Northline stopped receiving payments.
Banks were notified that two executives involved in related transactions no longer had authority.
Projects continued.
Employees still got paid.
Reality did not collapse just because Ethan’s private life had.
Then the forensic accountant traced the $146,000 from the joint investment account.
Nearly $90,000 ended in Northline.
Another $36,000 paid for a condominium reservation in Sarasota, Florida.
The purchaser was Natalie.
The remaining money paid for furniture deposits, travel, and closing-related costs.
Ethan stared at the dates.
The condo reservation occurred four months earlier.
Natalie had been planning a physical exit long before Ava saw the kiss.
