Chapter 15 - Ten Minutes at the Kitchen Table

The district attorney’s office did not resolve the case quickly.

Eleanor was later charged with offenses related to identity misuse, account theft, and her treatment of Maya and Liam. Her attorney negotiated release conditions that included no contact with Maya, no entry into our building, and full financial disclosure while the case remained pending.

Chloe was not charged with the kitchen abuse.

Her cooperation, staged photographs, removal of meals, and receipt of diverted funds remained part of the investigation. She closed her studio, sold its equipment, and began making monthly restitution payments.

The bank restored a portion of the recent unauthorized transfers. Recovering older money became a civil matter.

No check could repay the week Maya spent hungry, cold, and afraid inside her own home.

Maya’s physical recovery improved. Her incision healed. Liam gained weight and began waking every three hours with a cry strong enough to fill the apartment.

The police report remained in a folder Maya kept with medical records, bank letters, and copies of the protection order.

She never again had to rely on my memory of what happened.

I stayed in the hotel for seven weeks.

I attended counseling, transferred my salary into an account requiring Maya’s approval for household withdrawals, and removed myself as the sole administrator of every family service.

Not because she demanded control.

Because I had learned what happened when trust depended on one person choosing what everyone else was allowed to know.

Maya did not promise to remain married to me.

She allowed me regular time with Liam and invited me to attend pediatric appointments. We spoke about feeding schedules, legal bills, and sleep.

We avoided talking about forever.

One evening in February, I arrived with groceries and a container of chicken soup from the deli Maya liked.

The kitchen looked different.

The table had been moved closer to the radiator. The old camera above the doorway was gone. Maya had replaced it with a system registered only in her name.

Liam slept in a bassinet beside her.

I set the food on the counter.

“I can leave it here.”

Maya looked at the clock.

“You can stay ten minutes.”

I removed my coat and sat across from her at the same table where Eleanor had forced cold scraps into her mouth.

Maya served herself soup.

She ate slowly while I held Liam.

Neither of us tried to make the moment mean more than it did.

When ten minutes passed, I stood and carried Liam back to his bassinet.

At the front door, Maya touched the lock but did not open it immediately.

“Your hotel reservation ends next month,” she said.

“I can extend it.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the kitchen, then back at me.

“I’m not asking you to come home.”

“I understand.”

“But I’m not saying you never will.”

She opened the door.

I stepped into the hallway before hope could become another demand.

Behind me, Maya closed the door gently.

This time, I heard only one lock turn.
