Chapter 9 - THE SECRET INSIDE LUKE’S PAYMENT
The seventy-five thousand dollars had not been the whole agreement.
Evelyn produced a copy of a settlement document neither Daniel nor Luke possessed.
Thomas’s attorneys had drafted it privately during the guardianship fight.
The money paid Luke’s legal bills and his mother’s surgery.
But another term mattered more.
Luke acknowledged that Anna had expressed concern about his ability to parent alone.
Daniel read it twice.
“Did she?”
Evelyn nodded.
“She told me after you were born that Luke was overwhelmed.”
“That doesn’t mean she wanted you to take me.”
“She considered it.”
“Considered what?”
“Letting Thomas and me raise you.”
Daniel looked at Luke’s copy of Anna’s letter.
Anna clearly wanted Luke recognized as his father.
Both things could be true.
A frightened twenty-one-year-old mother could worry about finances and still love the father of her child.
Evelyn had turned anxiety into authorization.
Then Rachel noticed something on the settlement.
A witness signature.
Martin Hale.
Thomas Mercer’s longtime family attorney.
Still alive.
Still practicing part-time in Lake Forest.
Monica contacted him.
Hale initially refused to discuss privileged matters.
Then Daniel provided the documents and asked only about his own adoption history.
Hale agreed to meet.
He was eighty-two.
Sharp.
Uncomfortable.
And less loyal to the dead than Evelyn expected.
“Thomas wanted a son,” Hale said.
Daniel stared at him.
“Thomas had me.”
“Exactly.”
Hale explained that Thomas had suffered infertility after cancer treatment in his twenties.
He and Evelyn had been trying to adopt privately when Anna became pregnant.
At first, Evelyn helped her younger sister.
Then Anna struggled financially.
Thomas grew attached to the baby.
When Anna died, opportunity and grief collided.
“Did Thomas know Luke wanted me?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know about the letters?”
“At first.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Why did they stop?”
Hale looked down.
“That was Evelyn.”
Daniel leaned back.
For once the lie separated.
Thomas had participated in taking advantage of Luke’s financial weakness.
But Evelyn had later been the one who erased him completely.
Hale then revealed why Evelyn had panicked about the Mercer trust.
Thomas never told his father the adoption was non-biological.
The old man died believing Daniel was his biological grandson.
The trust distributions began under that assumption.
If the document excluded adopted descendants, millions had potentially been distributed incorrectly over decades.
Not because Daniel committed fraud.
Because adults before him had protected the lie.
Rachel whispered:
“That’s why Maya terrified her.”
Daniel nodded.
A five-year-old carrying the burgundy box through a room full of Mercer relatives could have opened the secret in seconds.
And Evelyn had chosen to humiliate a child rather than let that happen.
But the major question remained.
