Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN ERASED FROM THE FAMILY

Daniel did not sleep at the mansion.

Neither did Rachel or Maya.

They drove back to their Chicago townhouse that night.

Maya slept in the back seat with the crushed birthday crown on her lap.

At home, Rachel put her to bed and stayed until her breathing settled.

Then she found Daniel sitting on the kitchen floor with the burgundy box beside him.

“You okay?”

“No.”

Rachel sat opposite him.

For several minutes, Daniel said nothing.

Then:

“I remember asking why I didn’t have baby pictures before three months.”

Rachel looked at him.

“What did Evelyn say?”

“That there’d been a fire in storage.”

There had never been a fire.

Daniel remembered other details now.

No infant photographs at family holidays.

No newborn stories.

Whenever he asked about his birth, Thomas answered while Evelyn changed the subject.

Rachel touched the box.

“What else is in there?”

Daniel opened another envelope.

Anna Caldwell’s death certificate.

Cause of death: injuries sustained in a motor-vehicle collision.

Age: twenty-one.

Marital status: unmarried.

Then they found Luke Caldwell.

Not through the internet.

Through another piece of paper in Evelyn’s box.

A letter.

Old.

Creased from being opened repeatedly.

Evelyn,

You can keep telling yourself Thomas can give Danny more than I can. That doesn’t make this right.

You promised temporary guardianship.

Anna trusted you.

I am his father.

Luke.

Daniel read the final line again.

His hands began shaking.

Rachel whispered, “Evelyn took you from him?”

“We don’t know that.”

It came out defensive.

Rachel recognized why.

Daniel had already lost one version of his childhood that evening.

He wasn’t ready to lose the next one based on a single letter.

The following morning, he called Evelyn.

“I want everything.”

“You have no idea what you’re asking for.”

“Every record involving Anna, Luke, and me.”

“Daniel—”

“And you will not contact Maya.”

Evelyn went silent.

“That’s excessive.”

“You restrained my daughter outside her own birthday party.”

“She stole private property.”

“She found a box.”

“She disobeyed me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

There it was again.

Control disguised as morality.

“No contact.”

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“You are punishing me before you understand what I protected you from.”

Daniel almost hung up.

Then he asked:

“What did you protect me from?”

Evelyn answered carefully.

“From being raised by a man who could barely keep himself housed.”

Daniel looked across the kitchen at Rachel.

Class.

Again.

Luke Caldwell had apparently been poor.

Maya had been told she did not belong.

Daniel finally saw the line connecting those two facts.

“Was that your decision to make?”

Evelyn said nothing.

Daniel ended the call.

Then Rachel showed him something she had found at the bottom of the box.

A newspaper clipping about Anna’s crash.

There were two occupants listed in the car.

Anna Caldwell.

May you like

And Evelyn Mercer.

Evelyn had been there when Anna died.
