Chapter 11 - Knowing What They Did Did Not Clear My Conscience

Vittorio’s attorney called the next morning.

The video was serious.

The financial review was serious.

The unauthorized use of Vittorio’s credentials was serious.

None of those facts erased the punch Vittorio had thrown at Marcus.

His attorney reminded him of that plainly.

“If Marcus reports it, you tell the truth. You don’t minimize it because you were angry.”

Vittorio disliked hearing it.

That was precisely why he listened.

He had spent most of his life believing control meant remaining calm until action was required.

In the breakfast room, he had crossed that line.

The circumstances explained his reaction.

They did not make every reaction wise.

He documented the confrontation honestly.

Then he faced something harder.

Lucy.

He found her eating breakfast in the small upstairs sitting room instead of downstairs.

The dog-food bowl had been removed from the breakfast room and preserved with the rest of the evidence rather than thrown away in anger.

Lucy had asked where it went.

Vittorio told her the truth.

“Adults are keeping it because it helps show what happened.”

She nodded.

Then she asked, “Are you mad at me because I went in your study?”

The question almost undid him.

“No.”

“But Bianca said that was your most important room.”

“It isn’t.”

She looked confused.

“What is?”

Vittorio sat down beside her.

“You are.”

Lucy stared at her cereal.

Children did not heal because adults finally said the correct sentence.

After a moment she asked, “Then why didn’t you know?”

There was no answer he could soften without making it worse.

“Because I trusted Bianca when I should have asked you.”

Lucy waited.

“And because I was gone too much.”

He did not tell her he had been working for her future.

That excuse sounded pathetic now.

A child could not live inside a future.

She lived inside mornings.

Mondays.

Breakfast.

Doors opening.

Adults whispering.

Vittorio had missed those.

That afternoon Emma came to him with her resignation letter.

He refused to accept it immediately.

“You protected Lucy.”

“Too late.”

“So did I.”

Emma looked at him.

Neither of them could pretend courage arrived at the beginning.

Sometimes it arrived after too many compromises.

Vittorio asked her to stay temporarily while Lucy adjusted, with the understanding that Emma could leave whenever she wanted and would never again be expected to manage family danger alone.

She agreed to think about it.

Then Margaret called.

Bianca wanted to speak to Vittorio face-to-face.

No lawyers in the room.

Vittorio refused that condition.

He would meet.

But his attorney would know where.

And the conversation would happen only after Bianca understood one thing.

Knowing the truth did not mean he was ready to forgive her.

It meant she was finally going to have to answer it.
