Chapter 7 - THE MESSAGES THAT MADE HER MOTHER LOOK INCOMPETENT

The strongest pattern came from Ryan’s own messages to Naomi.
No hacked phone.
No hidden recording.
Just what he had already sent.
Naomi arranged them chronologically.
Before the trip:
Your mom really thinks she’s moving into that house?
I hope you’ve thought through whether Margaret can actually handle the twins.
She gets tired fast.
During the trip:
She forgot Emma’s cup again.
Your mom can’t keep up.
Mom had to rescue dinner.
Margaret gets overwhelmed and then blames everyone else.
After Naomi returned:
You’re letting one bruise turn your mother into a victim.
Naomi stared.
One bruise.
Ryan knew there was more than one.
He had seen Vivian grip Margaret’s arm.
He had been present when Margaret hit the wall the previous day.
Yet the messages built one consistent idea:
Margaret could not cope.
Naomi called Marissa.
“I think he was trying to make her look unfit before I moved.”
Her attorney answered carefully.
“You can believe that. We still need evidence before presenting motive as fact.”
That distinction steadied Naomi.
Facts first.
Margaret supplied another one.
On Saturday afternoon, Ryan asked her to hold both twins while he photographed the cluttered kitchen.
Margaret thought he was joking.
“What did he say?”
“That Naomi needed to see what the house looked like when I was in charge.”
Naomi went cold.
“Did he send me the picture?”
“No.”
At least not yet.
Margaret then remembered Vivian deliberately removing Emma’s sippy cup from the diaper bag and later accusing Margaret of losing it.
That sounded almost too manipulative to believe.
Naomi did not treat it as fact without support.
Then Oliver found the cup two days later.
Inside Vivian’s overnight tote still sitting in the marital-house mudroom.
Ryan returned the bag through his attorney after Naomi requested Margaret’s belongings.
The cup proved only that it ended up there.
Not who placed it.
Naomi refused to overstate it.
Still, the surrounding behavior had become impossible to ignore.
Vivian criticized Margaret for mistakes.
Ryan documented those mistakes.
Then Ryan sent Naomi messages arguing Margaret could not be trusted with the children.
Why?
The answer still seemed tied to the mansion.
Naomi asked the title company for the exact time Ryan called about it.
Wednesday, 2:18 p.m.
Two days before Naomi left.
That evening Ryan told Naomi for the first time:
Maybe Mom should be our main childcare after your trip. Your mother needs to focus on recovering.
At the time, it sounded considerate.
Now it sounded strategic.
If Vivian became the indispensable grandmother, Margaret’s ground-floor suite across the street made less sense.
If Margaret looked incapable, Naomi’s plan for independent family support weakened.
And if Naomi felt she could not manage the twins without Vivian, leaving Ryan became more difficult.
Naomi finally saw the pattern.

The confrontation in the kitchen had not started Friday.
It started the moment Ryan realized Naomi had built a life across the street that did not require him.
