Chapter 12 - THE CONVERSATION RYAN COULD NOT MANAGE

The mediation room had beige walls and terrible coffee.

Ryan hated both.

Naomi could tell.

He had always performed best in beautiful environments where confidence looked natural.

Here, nothing helped him.

Naomi sat across the table with Marissa.

Ryan had his attorney.

The mediator asked about temporary parenting arrangements first.

Ryan wanted equal time immediately.

Naomi did not oppose his relationship with the twins.

She opposed unsupervised involvement from Vivian.

That distinction mattered.

Ryan became defensive.

“You’re punishing my mother.”

Naomi answered, “I’m protecting Margaret and the children from someone who used physical aggression in front of them.”

“She lost her temper once.”

“Twice that weekend.”

Ryan looked away.

Then the mediator moved to finances.

The company cards.

Household management payments.

Vivian’s support.

Ryan’s projected Reed Air revenue.

Eventually Naomi asked the question she had been waiting to ask.

“Why did you need my mother to fail?”

Ryan stiffened.

“I didn’t.”

Naomi repeated Margaret’s remembered sentence.

If she sees her mother can’t survive one weekend with those kids, she’ll never move her into that palace.

Ryan’s face changed.

He looked at his attorney.

The attorney said nothing.

“That’s not what it sounds like.”

Naomi almost smiled.

“What does it sound like?”

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“Mom was threatened.”

“So you helped her?”

“No.”

“You invited her to stay.”

“Yes.”

“You sent me messages saying Margaret couldn’t handle the children.”

“Because she couldn’t.”

“She had pneumonia.”

“She said she was recovered.”

“So you gave her more work?”

Ryan snapped.

“I was trying to show you the plan wasn’t realistic.”

There it was.

Not denial.

Justification.

“What plan?”

“Moving your mother into that house. Moving the kids. Leaving me across the street like some divorced dad in a bad sitcom.”

Naomi stared at him.

“You found out I bought it and decided the problem was my mother.”

“The problem was you’d already decided everything.”

Naomi let that land.

There was truth in it.

She had bought a second home without telling her husband.

She had planned separation privately.

Ryan had reason to feel betrayed.

He did not have permission to manufacture evidence that Margaret was incapable.

Naomi said exactly that.

Ryan looked down.

Then finally said what he was truly protecting.

“If you left with the kids and your mother, there was nothing left in my life that looked like mine.”

The house was Naomi’s.

The cars were Naomi’s company leases.

The cards were tied to Naomi.

His consulting income was weak.

His mother depended on Naomi’s support.

Even the neighborhood social life revolved around Naomi’s clients and friends.

Ryan had spent years calling their lifestyle ours.

Privately, he knew how much belonged to her.

The mansion made that imbalance visible.

He panicked.

Not because he loved Naomi more than she knew.

Because without her, he did not know who he was.

Understanding the wound made Ryan more human.

It did not make him safe.
